A BOX OF MEMORIES – AWARD-WINNING AUSTRALIAN MUSICAL COMES TO Q THEATRE
Award-winning Australian documentary musical A Box of Memories will make its New Zealand debut at Q Theatre’s Loft from 22–25 October 2026.
Created by Australian writers Erin McKellar (Music & Lyrics) and Duncan McKellar (Book & Lyrics), A Box of Memories is a deeply moving and warmly human musical exploring what it means to live with dementia — not only as a diagnosis, but as an experience that reshapes identity, relationships, family and daily life.
At the centre of the story is Lizzy, a woman navigating gradual changes to her memory and sense of self. Alongside her are Sonia, her daughter, caught between love, grief and responsibility, and Jeremy, a doctor attempting to support Lizzy and her family while working within the pressures of the healthcare system.
Through original music, humour and emotional honesty, the musical gives voice to experiences that are often hidden or misunderstood and asks audiences to see the person beyond the illness.
The work premiered to a sell-out season at the 2022 Adelaide Fringe Festival, where it received a BankSA Best Theatre Weekly Award, and has subsequently been presented in Sydney and Adelaide. It was also commissioned to open the Centre of Innovation and Humanising Care Conference in Pittsburgh, USA. The Q Theatre listing notes the production's Australian seasons and Pittsburgh presentation.
For its New Zealand season, A Box of Memories is working in partnership with Inicio Health Care Trust, bringing together artists and healthcare practitioners through a shared interest in dementia care, human connection and the role storytelling can play in changing conversations around ageing and care. Inicio HTC serves as Executive Producer for the season.
