Conductor James Gaffigan leads the National Symphony Orchestra in a program evoking the American landscape, opening with Charles Ives' Three Places in New England and followed by Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring Suite, with its iconic "Shaker" melody. The program closes with Mahler's Symphony No. 1, tracing a youthful wayfarer's journey through darkness to a triumphant climax. Gaffigan serves as General Music Director of Komische Oper Berlin and has been named the next Music Director of Houston Grand Opera.
