The Attic Ensemble Seeks Actors for CROWNS

By: Dec. 03, 2011

The Attic Ensemble announces auditions for a non-union production of "Crowns" a play with music by ReGina Taylor, directed by Judith Moss, on Tues. and Weds. December 6th and 7th; 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Attic Ensemble, 83 Wayne St., Jersey City, NJ. Performances are 2/17-26, 2012. Rehearsals will be held in the evening with weekend rehearsals as needed.

YOLANDA: 20's. (must be able to appear 15-18). Sassy but introverted, Yolanda keeps her feelings inside, except when she raps. Keenly observant, intelligent but reticent, her evolution to fully express herself is at the core of this story. Ultimately, must be charming, winning and exuberant.

MOTHER SHAW: 50s-60s. (African counter part: Obatala- Orisha of wisdom-creativity). The well-spring of the family and the elder who holds wisdom and compassion as her legacy. Deeply spiritual. Needs to be a singer with emotional and vocal range from belt to legit.

VELMA. 30s. (African counter part : Oya - Orisha of storms - purple). Flashy and has a past, Velma now expresses herself in her vivid stories and glittery hats. Knows how to have fun, but is also capable of stormy weather.

MABEL. 50s (African counter part: Shango - Orisha of fire). The most conservative. Married a minister and always did the right thing. Has a genuine insight into human condition, but likes ladies to be ladies. She has a behavior code and believes in it - and you better believe in it too!

JEANETTE: 30s (African counter part: Yemaya - Orisha of seas) She's been a working girl a long time - cosmetics counter at the local department store. Prides herself on her appearance - and the ability of a hat to create mystery, flirtation, whatever the mode calls for. She's a mother, wife and woman who really loves her hats.

WANDA: 30s (African counter part: Oshun - Orisha of the river and water) Can be extroverted or introverted - changing like the river winds. Spunky. Always wants the last word.

MAN: 30-40s. Baritone. Plays all the male roles in the play: Father, Reverend, beaus of the women, and others as cast. Versatile actor with a big baritone voice. Good sense of humor. Must be able to move well - dance experience welcome.

The ladies in CROWNS come in all shapes and sizes. A company of three generations of African American women with "hattitude" will form the ensemble of CROWNS. All actresses must be experienced in harmony and gospel singing and must be able to move well.

There are no appointments necessary; actors will be seen on a first come/first served basis. Bring pix & résumés, stapled together. Please prepare an a capella gospel selection (traditional or contemporary). Sides will be provided for cold readings at the audition and posted on our website.
