Anointed by Philadelphia theater journalist A.D. Amorosi for having "already achieved legendary status," this inventive production, which features an ensemble of 10, and a single piano opened to rave reviews. Ben Brantley in The New York Times proclaimed, "I fell head over heels," while Simon Saltzman in U.S. 1 raved, "This staging allows virtually every member to stand out and shine, make us laugh, or simply make us just think, wow!" Ronni Reich in The Star Ledger called McCarter's production, "fresh, witty and moving as ever." Don Gilpin in Town Topics summed it up as "theater magic," and Bob Brown in Time Off/Packet Publications declared "From the moment the cast assembles onstage, you know you're in for something different...there's a lot to enjoy here. It's the best Into the Woods I know."

In announcing the production, McCarter Theatre Artistic Director Emily Mann said, "When we were searching for the perfect project to cap the season, my associate producer Adam Immerwahr, shared with me that Fiasco Theater was putting together a new take on Into the Woods - and I was immediately intrigued." Ms. Mann added, "With a tiny cast and some wild doubling, a set of brilliant actor-musicians and great creativity, this is an Into the Woods that you can't see anywhere else."
