Darlene Love Honored at bergenPAC Women's Luncheon

Bergen Performing Arts Center celebrated two remarkable women at its annual Women's Luncheon, held in Englewood, New Jersey. The event brought together community leaders, music fans, and supporters to honor Grammy winner and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Darlene Love, alongside Roberta Mathes, Artistic Director of Dance at bergenPAC Performing Arts School.

Darlene Love's career is a testament to resilience and dedication. Rising from humble beginnings, Love faced numerous challenges on her path to musical stardom. From overcoming industry obstacles to weathering personal hardships, she persevered with unwavering faith and gratitude. Her soulful voice has backed some of music's biggest legends, including Elvis Presley, Dionne Warwick, and Cher, making her a cornerstone of American music history. Darlene Love is known for hit songs,  “Be My Baby, “Rebel”  and “Doo Doo Ron Ron.”

Despite the struggles, Love's contributions as a backup singer shaped the sound of countless iconic hits. Her determination and talent eventually earned her solo success, culminating in a Grammy Award and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Attendees were treated to a preview of Love's upcoming documentary, which promises to explore her inspiring journey, highlighting her perseverance and impact on the music industry. The film will shine a light on her story of overcoming adversity and her enduring influence as a leading woman performer.

Darlene Love, renowned for her iconic performance of the holiday classic “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home,” experienced a profound shift in her career thanks to this unforgettable anthem. The song not only became a cornerstone of her musical legacy but also propelled her into the spotlight each year as she delivered electrifying renditions at the close of every holiday season on the David Letterman show. Her annual tradition extended beyond television, as she finished her celebrated holiday tour with a performance at bergenPAC, following earlier appearances at the historic John Harms Theater.

This year's honor was made even more meaningful as last year's recipient, legendary singer Gloria Gaynor, presented the award to Darlene Love. The moment symbolized the strength and unity of women in music, celebrating mutual respect and shared achievements.

bergenPAC also recognized Roberta Mathes for her two decades of leadership as Artistic Director of Dance at the Performing Arts School. Mathes has profoundly influenced dance education, nurturing generations of students and guiding many to professional careers in the arts. Her dedication, vision, and passion have elevated bergenPAC's dance program to new heights, making it a beacon for aspiring dancers in the region.
