The Barn Theatre of Montville, New Jersey announces the kick-off to their 90th Anniversary season on September 8 with the 2014 Tony Award-nominated play "Mothers and Sons" by Terrence McNally. At turns funny and powerful, the play centers on Katharine Gerard, a woman who pays an unexpected visit to The New York apartment of Cal, her late son Andre's partner. Cal, however, is now married to Will, with whom he has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as Katharine revisits the past and begins to see the life her son, Andre, might have led.

Called a 'debate play' by Ben Brantley of The New York Times when it opened, director Tom Schopper believes the show does much more than debate the topic of gay rights. "The world is in a different place even just three years after this show was performed on Broadway," says Schopper. "People who saw the show then will see it in an entirely different way today."

Schopper goes on to share that the show is much more than a "gay play" as the 90 minute play (with no intermission) touches on so many topics such as marriage, children, parenting, family, love, loss, grief, compassion, hope, and change. "You may stand on opposite sides of this so-called debate," Schopper says, "but common ground can be found on so many of these other topics. I believe the Barn audiences are in for a beautiful story that will move them and definitely send them out afterwards thinking about what they saw and perhaps starting a conversation of their own."

The cast of Mothers and Sons features: Jodi Freeman Maloy as Katharine Gerard, Greg Allen as Cal Porter, Scott Baird as Will Ogden, and Liam Sheffield as Bud Ogden-Porter.
Performances will be on September 8, 15, 16, 22, 23, and 30 at 8pm; and on September 9, 10, 17, 24, at 2pm. Tickets are $20 (senior/student tickets are $18 on matinees only). There will be no performance on Yom Kippur, September 29, 2017.

The Barn Theatre is located on Skyline Drive in Montville, NJ, just minutes off Exit 47 from Route 287. For more reservations, information or directions, call The Barn Theatre Box Office at (973) 334-9320, or visit The Barn Theatre on the web at www.barntheatre.org
