REVIEW: MACBETH at the Guthrie

Anyone walking into a production of Shakespeare's MACBETH should expect it to be a bloody affair. After all, it's one of his most gruesome plays - dark and weird and violent. Its newest incarnation at the Guthrie (the 50th Shakespeare production overall) doesn't falter on any of these; it's a taut and thrilling rendition of one of the Bard's most compelling works.

The Guthrie and Mu Performing Arts today announced that actor Randy Reyes will star in the Mu production of the Obie Award-winning play YELLOW FACE by David Henry Hwang, directed by Rick Shiomi. The production, proudly presented by the Guthrie, marks the second of three works by Hwang - all of which feature Reyes in leading roles - to be presented in the Twin Cities during the 2009-10 season. Reyes' performance as DHH, Hwang's alter-ego in YELLOW FACE, is bookended by his appearance in Mu's recent production of Hwang's new adaptation of FLOWER DRUM SONG, and his upcoming appearance as Song Liling in the Guthrie's production of M. BUTTERFLY.

In response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, four local theater professionals have asked their friends and colleagues to help raise money in the Haiti relief effort. All proceeds will go to the Heart for Haiti Trust which will divide the donations into two charities; the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Feed My Starving Children.

With the sometimes-high cost of theatre tickets, an evening out can be beyond the means of young theatergoers. Luckily, The Hennepin Theatre Trust-the non-profit organization that owns and operates Minneapolis' State, Orpheum, and Pantages Theatres and Hennepin Stages-is aware of this issue and seeking to do something about it. This fall, the Trust created a new initiative called The Scene to make theatre and other events in their performance spaces more affordable, accessible, and approachable for patrons age 21 to 39, as well as to provide a network of other people in the area with similar interests.
