Stephen Sondheim, the legendary Broadway composer/lyricist of some of the greatest works in American musical theatre, launches Hennepin Theatre Trust's new Living Legends series at 8 p.m. at the State Theatre, Friday, March 5, 2010. With landmark shows to his credit including Gypsy, West Side Story, A Little Night Music and Follies and inimitable songs from "Everything's Coming Up Roses" to "Send in the Clowns," he has been the single most influential force in bringing the Broadway musical into the modern age. The evening will feature Sondheim in conversation with Star Tribune theatre critics Rohan Preston and Graydon Royce. Tickets go on sale Friday, Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. Visit www.HennepinTheatreTrust.org or call 1-800-982-2787 for tickets or more information.

In a career of more than 50 years, Sondheim has written the music and lyrics for a succession of groundbreaking musicals: multi-Tony Award-winning shows Company in 1970, Sweeney Todd in 1979 and Passion in 1994. The State Theatre conversation may range from his creative process and his collaborations with Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins and mentor Oscar Hammerstein II to the state of American musical theatre. Sondheim has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, two Grammys, an Oscar, eight Tonys (including a special award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre in 2008) and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2002. Sondheim will appear as part of Hennepin Theatre Trust's new series Living Legends, featuring live appearances by artists of distinction. More information and additional events will be announced soon.
