The Power of Arts and Civic Engagement

Friday, May 9, 2008 at Broward Community College in Davie

Broward County Cultural Division, in partnership with Americans for the Arts, and VisionBROWARD, invite all members of the community to a lively and practical set of workshops: Arts and Civic Engagement presented by Barbara Schaffer Bacon and Sandy Agustin, on Friday, May 9, 9:40 – 12:20 p.m. AND 1:40 – 4:24 p.m., at Broward Community College – Central Campus Library, 3501 SW Davie Road, Davie, FL.

In Broward, this program will be one of the cultural components of the four-day South Florida Ideas Exchange 2008, (www.SFIdeasExchange.com from May 8-11, 2008, whose purpose is to encourage the citizens of South Florida to develop working solutions to the issues facing the region. By May 12, 2008, more than 20,000 citizens of the region will have attended some part of this world-class event. They will have discussed issues with highly diverse, forward- thinkers and actors regionally, statewide, and nationally, on subjects such as health, transportation, housing, education, business development, and diversity.

The Arts and Civic Engagement workshop will offer practices of fostering civic engagement through arts and culture and developing strategies to achieve social goals. This forum is tailored to support goals that the Broward Cultural Division has defined to link cultural resources to civic concerns. This know-how is rapidly becoming a required skill-set as important as fundraising, planning, and marketing.

Barbara Schaffer Bacon is the co-director of the Animating Democracy program at Americans for the Arts, and Sandy Agustin, is an artist and cultural worker based in Minneapolis. Schaffer Bacon has written, edited, and contributed to several publications, including the revised edition of Fundamentals of Local Arts Management and The Cultural Planning Work Kit, published by the Arts Extension Service. Sandy Agustin is an independent consultant, facilitator, and performing artist/choreographer.

Arts and Civic Engagement comes to us through Animating Democracy, a program of Americans for the Arts that is part of a nationwide partnership with local arts agencies and National Endowment for the Arts – Supported Arts and Civic Engagement forums, to be presented in four communities. Nationally, the forums will be presented in partnership with Los Angeles County Arts Commission, CA, Greater Columbus Arts Council, OH, 40 North/88West, Champaign-Urbana, IL and here in Broward County through the Cultural Division.
