The Ukraine's Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra - led by American Maestro Hobart Earle and joined by Mariangela Vacatello, the Italian finalist in the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition - come to Gainesville's Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 3.

Born in Venezuela of American parents, Hobart Earle is currently in his seventeenth season as Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra. During this time, Mr. Earle has elevated the orchestra to a position of international prominence, unprecedented in the history of the organization. In point of fact, the Odessa Philharmonic is the first performing arts organization in the entire country to have had its funding status raised by the government of Ukraine from regional to federal to national, since the independence of Ukraine in 1991.

Hobart Earle has conducted hundreds of concerts with the Odessa Philharmonic to wide acclaim - in the major concert halls of the United States, Canada, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Bulgaria, Russia and throughout Ukraine.

Mariangela Vacatello

A Finalist in the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Mariangela Vacatello is in demand for engagements in prestigious venues worldwide including the Berlin Konzerthause, Wigmore Hall in London, and Linder Auditorium in Johannesburg.

This season she will appear as soloist with the Odessa Philharmonic (Ukraine) on their American tour and the Tupelo Symphony in Mississippi. She will also appear in recital on the Steinway Piano Series at Oregon State University. In addition to her achievement in the Van Cliburn Competition, she was also the recipient of the Laureate Prize at the The Queen Elisabeth International Music Competition of Belgium and received Second Prize at the International Franz List Piano Competition in The Netherlands.

University of Florida Performing Arts does more than entertain. It breaks down walls. It breaks down the walls between people by increasing cultural awareness through programming that attracts artists and audiences from around the globe. It breaks down the wall between patron and performer with educational programs such as master classes, artist residencies and pre- and post-performance discussions. It breaks down the wall between health and illness with AIM Together, a collaborative program between UFPA and Shands HealthCare that brings world-class performing artists to those who are hospitalized. It breaks down the wall between idea and realization by commissioning and nurturing new work. Art doesn't have walls. But sometimes life does. UFPA breaks down the walls, enriching the lives of the citizens in the Heart of Florida, helping to make Gainesville "the #1 place to live."
