New Theatre's 2008-2009 Season

New Theatre announces a 2008 – 2009 Season of Invigorated Classics and World Premieres

Under the artistic leadership of Ricky J. Martinez, New Theatre has refined its focus on new work by producing a "Nouveau Classic" blend of well known plays and new works for the upcoming 2008-09 season. 

New Theatre kicks off the season with one of the Bard's most accessible romantic comedies, As You Like It (August 14 - September 14, 2008,) which follows Shakespeare's gorgeous heroine, Rosalind, into a forest of possibilities. The nature of true love versus romantic love are put to the test amidst misunderstandings, gender confusions, and mistaken identities. The season moves from this adaptation of Shakespeare's classic comedy to New Theatre's first World Premiere of the season, The Rant by Andrew Case (September 25 – October 26, 2008.) In this contemporary drama, an investigator is assigned to the murder case of a 16 year old African American boy, killed by an NYPD police officer, and must wade through prejudice, deceit, and a volley of anonymous threats to find hidden truth. The Rant is followed by the World Premiere of local playwright, Michelle Rosenfarb's The Gates of Choice (November 13 – December 14, 2008.) Set in the Israeli Ultra Orthodox quarter of Mea Shearim, the play's protagonist is a young, Hasidic woman faced with an arranged marriage who finds refuge and answers in a taboo relationship. 

Destined to be another fine season, New Theatre launches into 2009 with a perfect Valentine – the World Premiere of Robert Caisley's Kissing (January 15 –February 15, 2009.) This biologically ticking comedy heats up after an illicit office kiss sends the lives of two couples spinning out-of-control.  The second classic of the season, Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie runs from February 26 – March 29, 2009. The lyrical and powerful autobiographical play by Williams is noted as one of the great masterpieces of American drama and the winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play.  Completing the season is the Southeastern Premiere of Mauritius by Pulitzer Prize nominated playwright, Theresa Rebeck.  This sharp, funny, and engaging work presents a betrayal in every scene and will keep you waiting for the next plot twist.

Thursdays – Saturdays 8 pm and Sundays at 1 pm. 

Additional Sunday 5:30 pm on select Sundays.
