Florida Rep's beloved theatre series for children and families is new and improved.  The first new feature of Lunchbox Theatre is an expanded schedule. For the first time Florida Rep will offer 18 weeks of family entertainment, and beginning January 5th there will be a performance every Saturday morning until May 10th.

"We're all very excited about the new schedule," says Education Director, Jamie Carmichael. "The program needed to grow, and this is the first big step. But we're even more excited about our new home in the River District."

Florida Rep is proud to announce a partnership this season with The Brick Bar, 2226 Bay Street, and every Saturday morning at 11am, the Brick Bar will be transformed into The Brick Bar Theatre. "It is a wonderful space, and the perfect new home for the Lunchbox Series," said Rachel Burttram, Director of Audience Development. "It's a warm, inviting and intimate space with great atmosphere, and it is right here in the River District. It really embodies the new face of downtown."

Also new this season, Florida Rep is offering three plays as opposed the usual two. "In previous years we've produced only two plays, but this season we took on a third," Carmichael went on. "It's been a very positive experience. The plays are touring right now to schools in the area, and the reaction has been overwhelming."

The Lunchbox Theatre Series will present the three plays in rotation this winter and spring, giving parents and families the opportunity to choose a time that is best for their schedule. ZAP! will open the series followed by Ms. Courageous and then The Mischief Makers.

ZAP! is a play about electricity – safety, history and conservation - and is the centerpiece of the Educational Theatre programs this season. Produced in partnership with LCEC (Lee County Electric Cooperative,) ZAP! is a special commission, written by award-winning playwright, Eric Coble. "The partnership with LCEC, and with the playwright has surpassed all of our expectations," says Development director, Amiee Turner. "The play is really top notch, and we're very proud to give it a world premiere in Southwest Florida."

It is the story of Joanna Wilcox, a girl who doesn't ask why the lights come on or what powers her flat screen TV. Audiences will join her on a fun and colorful journey of electric proportions. With the help of Zap, an Electrical Super Hero, and the three other stimulating spirits, Joanna travels through time to learn how to Get Smart, Get Safe and Get Saving. ZAP! plays January 5, 12, 19, March 15, April 5 and 26. Shows begin at 11am.

Ms. Courageous is a collage of scenes from the lives of Elizabeth Blackwell and Marie Curie. Blackwell was the first woman in the United States to become a doctor with a medical degree, and Curie won two Nobel prizes for her work in physics and chemistry. Written by Joanna Halpert Kraus, Ms. Courageous explores the difficulties and challenges these two remarkable women faced and overcame. Ms. Courageous plays at the Brick Bar Theatre on January 26, February 2, 9, March 22, April 12 and May 3 at 11am.

The Mischief Makers, by Lowell Swortzell, shows us what happens when Anansi the Spider from Africa, Reynard the Fox from Europe, and the Native American Raven mysteriously find themselves on the same totem pole. These three tricksters must compete to see who is the cleverest and most cunning. This delightful story is woven from the rich and varied mythology and folklore from all over the world. These rascals come to life at the Brick Bar Theatre on February 23, March 1, 8, 29, April 19, May 10 at 11am.

Tickets to Lunchbox Theatre are $12, and admission includes the performance, a boxed lunch provided by McAllister's Deli, and an interactive workshop with the cast. You can purchase tickets by calling Florida Rep's box office at 239-332-4488. Please do not call the Brick Bar for ticket information.
