It's A Wonderful Life: A Radio Play at Portland Stage

Artistic Director Anita Stewart says, “Joe Landry’s It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play is a heartfelt and truly theatrical adaptation of this beloved holiday classic that reminds me of what’s most important in life.”

Coming to you LIVE from Radio Station WBFR, actors are prepping to present a live radio performance of It’s a Wonderful Life. The play transports us from the radio station to the world of Bedford Falls on the eve of the Great Depression, sharing the timeless tale of George Bailey. Featuring live 40’s era foley sound that highlights the story and onstage musician Mrs. McGillicutty on the piano, five core actors tell the heartfelt story with the help of actors in the young company.

George Bailey’s tale of renewal and rejuvenation allows us to reflect on the million different ways we are tied to our communities. This adaptation allows the audience a fresh chance to see the tale anew, with a radio-era lens of nostalgia that’s sure to be a perfect treat in time for the holidays.
