"Just Another Birthday in Bedlam" written by Catherine Butterfield and directed by Barry Heins for "Together LA: A Virtual Stage Festival" premieres 10/8/2020 at Interact Theatre Company
Alternative Theatre Los Angeles in association with LA Stage Alliance presents Together LA: A Virtual Stage Festival, Oct 1 - 17, celebrating the vibrant and diverse intimate theatre scene of the greater Los Angeles area. Over the course of 3 weekends, 34 of L.A.'s professional intimate theatre companies will showcase new and exciting 10-15 minute plays created specifically for the digital platform.
On Thursday October 8th, Interact Theatre Company will present "Just Another Birthday in Bedlam," a 13-minute comedy written by Catherine Butterfield and directed by Barry Heins. The cast features ITC ensemble members Amanda Carlin, Tezz Yancey, Colin Thomas Jennings, Lily Rains, Tamika Simpkins, Marc Valera, Alexandra Wright, Kristen Egermeier, Fred Sanders, and Anthony Wofford.
Los Angeles playwright Catherine Butterfield is an Obie and Drama Desk Award nominee, the recipient of the Robert L. Stevens/ Kennedy Center Award for Excellence, the Davie Award for best new play in Regional Theatre, and the Kaufman and Hart Prize for new American comedy. She is possibly best known for her plays "Joined at the Head," about a novelists reunion with her first love and his new wife who is suffering from cancer, and "The Sleeper," a dark comedy about a woman who has an affair with her sons tutor and then begins to suspect he's a terrorist. Of the Manhattan Theatre Club Off-Broadway production of "Joined at the Head," New York Times drama critic Mel Gussow wrote, "Butterfield is revealed as a playwright with a refreshing talent for probing the reality of relationships. In a manner related to that of Tom Stoppard and John Guare, the work deals enticingly with truth and fiction... a vibrant reflection on life and art." For the Laguna Playhouse, Catherine was commissioned to write and direct her play "Brownstone," about three generations in the life of a Manhattan brownstone. Recently, Ms. Butterfield and her partner Ron West have created a web series entitled "Life During Lockdown," which consists of (so far) 51 short sketches about their life and the lives of their friends during the Covid-19 crisis. You can find it on Youtube under her name. She has also written a good deal for film and TV.
