MTR's vision for Dogfight goes beyond the surface-level theme of overcoming beauty stereotypes. In a broader sense, Dogfight tells the story of a world in which people are led to blindly follow societal norms rooted in generations before them without questioning moral implications, and what happens when this world is challenged.

The musical follows a group of young Marines on the evening of November 21, 1963, their last night in the U.S. before heading to Vietnam, where they think they will be doing clerical work. During this time, American soldiers headed blindly into war, without a true understanding of what was to come and without fear of consequences. In Dogfight, the Marines remain comfortable in their ignorance, following the generations that came before them in wartime America. These boys believe that they too, will return home to parades of celebration, lauded as “hometown heroes,” but the terrors of war ultimately strip these young men of their innocence and for some, their lives. Heroism and patriotism triumph only momentarily, soon shrouded by the lingering effects of loss and transformation.
Transformation, as it relates to pushing the boundaries of conformity, is firmly embedded within the show’s characters. Rose, the leading female role, acts as a symbol of wisdom and perspective in the narrative. She introduces Eddie Birdlace, the leading male character, to musicians such as Woody Guthrie (“This Land Is Your Land”) and Eric Clapton (“Change the World”), sharing with him her belief that music can enact real change in a faltering society. The brutal nature of both war and the dogfight, an invited dance where Marines compete to find the ugliest date, are contrasted with Rose's aspiration to write songs that will change the way people treat one another. It is not imposed ideas of beauty standards that mark her as a wallflower. Rather, her empathetic perspectives and ideas drive her and the plot forward. In MTR’s Dogfight, Rose will be explored not as a victim, but as a steadfast beacon for change within one of the most rigid institutions in our society: the military.

The cast includes Terry Mullany as Eddie Birdlace, Lily Castle as Rose Fenny, Taylor Kass as Marcy, David Shadman as Boland, Daniel Murphy as Bernstein, Piper Kingston as Mama, Alejandra Villanueva as Ruth Two Bears, Sunny Malhotra as Fector, Alex Oliva as Stevens, and Sebastian Rabassa as Gibbs.

The show is directed by Austin Karkowsky with assistance from Tata Vivas, music directed by Katie Kivinski with assistance from Nick Kassoy, and choreographed by Zach Manske with assistance from Erica Ammerman. Domenica Diaz serves as production stage manager with Beth Yeo as assistant. Technical direction and set design by Jordan Fox, lighting design by Edward Hansen, sound design by Joy Cheever, costume design by Natalie Pesqueira, props design by Damaris Eddy, and military advisement by Tripp Quarles. The show will be produced by Tyler Ellis and Sarah Campbell.
