The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles® (BAFTA Los Angeles), which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, announced today that American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance producer Nigel Lythgoe will chair the Britannia Committee, which oversees the production of the Britannia Awards. The 2012 Britannia Awards will take place on Wednesday, November 7 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Britannia Awards are BAFTA Los Angeles’ highest accolade, a celebration of achievements honoring individuals and companies that have dedicated their careers or corporate missions to advancing the entertainment arts.

Says Lythgoe, BAFTA Los Angeles Chairman in 2010/2011, who also serves on the Board’s Executive Committee, “I am delighted to be chairing the committee that produces the Britannia Awards during BAFTA LA’s 25th anniversary year. As the prestige and media attention around the show has grown in recent years, our goal is to take it to the next level.”

The awards are presented annually at a gala dinner, where peers and colleagues celebrate the work and accomplishments of the distinguished honorees. Awards include the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film; Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for Contribution to Worldwide Entertainment; John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Excellence in Directing, and the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. Proceeds from the gala ceremony support BAFTA Los Angeles’ ongoing education, scholarship, community outreach and archival projects.

The Britannia Award was first given to Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli in 1989. Past recipients also include Warren Beatty, Helena Bonham Carter, Sir Michael Caine, Tom Cruise, Robert De Niro, Clint Eastwood, Colin Firth, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Anthony Hopkins, the late Stanley Kubrick, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Dame Elizabeth Taylor, Christopher Nolan, Emily Blunt, Sean Penn, Dame Helen Mirren, Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet and Denzel Washington.
