24th Street Theatre Receives Peter Zeisler Memorial Award

By:

A national spotlight shone on Los Angeles-based 24th Street Theatre at the 2012 TCG (Theatre Communications Group) National Conference in Boston when the 15-year-old theater was honored with the Peter Zeisler Memorial Award for"Outstanding Achievement In The American Theatre."

The Peter Zeisler Memorial Award recognizes an individual or organization whose work reflects and promotes ingenuity and artistic integrity, exemplifies pioneering practices in theater, is dedicated to the freedom of expression, and is unafraid of taking risks for the advancement of the art form. Previous recipients include The Foundry Theatre, Elevator Repair Service and actor, rapper, playwright and educator Will Power.

"We are delighted to award 24th Street Theatre with the 2012 Peter Zeisler Memorial Award," said Teresa Eyring, executive director of TCG. "It has always been our desire to use this award to spotlight innovative and inventive work around the country. 24th Street theatre exemplifies the risk-taking spirit of the late TCG executive director and it is an honor to recognize this cutting-edge organization."

24th Street Theatre, under the leadership of artistic director Debbie Devine and executive director Jay McAdams, is known for being a leader in arts education and community outreach as well as for presenting quality professional theater for young and old alike. Using art as a tool to positively impact the world around them, 24th Street's programming includes free after school enrichment programs, Teatro Nuevo Latino Initiative projects, a music series, outreach programs for at-risk teens, free community events, professional development programs for teachers, arts-ed school workshops, gallery exhibits and international touring in addition to critically acclaimed season productions geared for both adult and family audiences.

McAdams traveled to Boston to accept the award, which was presented by Diane Rodriguez of Center Theatre Group on June 23 and was accompanied by a check for $1,000.

"I'm proud to have a nationally recognized theater in my district," said Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry. "I've always known that arts organizations make a huge difference, and 24th Street Theatre has been one of our City's greatest treasures for fifteen years."

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for the American theater, exists to strengthen, nurture and promote the professional not-for-profit American theater, with nearly 700 member theaters and affiliate organizations and more than 12,000 individuals nationwide.
