BWW Reviews: BroadHollow's 1776
In seeing the Tony winning Sherman Edwards/Peter Stone musical 1776, we get an interesting account of historical events. The cast at BroadHollow's BayWay Theatre in East Islip are comical, comfortable in their roles, and are extremely talented.
Running through March 15th at the Long Island venue, the large Glen J. Beck directed cast is headed up strongly by Michael Buscemi portraying John Adams. The tale centers on Adams' efforts to convince his colleagues in Congress to sign the Declaration of Independence; the idea that he originated. This proves to be a difficult fete as his reputation as a nuisance - to say the least - precedes him. It is actually uncanny - and kind of funny - how this story still resonates today; petty arguing and how divided "leaders" can be are highlighted in this production.
The whole cast is truly superb each engrossing themselves in their roles. Scott Earle, portraying Richard Henry Lee, gave a rousing performance of "The Lees Of Old Virginia" in Act I. This is a demanding piece and the talented Mr. Earle performs it effortlessly. Additionally, Rick Grossman, as the famed Benjamin Franklin, is fantastic being given most of the zingers in the show.
The multi-level stage is also cleverly decorated and designed - as expected; this is a Bob Butterley set - with an abundance of dark wooden desks and featuring a large wall mount to indicate how each state votes. The costumes, done by Joseph Kassner, were ideal as well. White - some balding - wigs were aplenty. They also did this spectacular moment at the end - when they're signing the Declaration - where they all pause as if they are taking a picture. Kudos to lighting designer Hemraj Budhram for this impressive moment.
As so, BroadHollow should be very proud of this wonderful, well executed production. In one of the larger shows seen at the BayWay, the 1776 cast each holds their own and work very well with each other. An intriguing story and superb cast make for a thrilling night of theatre.
