Former Lead Singer Of The Platters Sonny Turner And Queen Of Comedy Sommore Return To Suncoast In January
Former lead singer of The Platters Sonny Turner and award-winning comedienne Sommore will perform at Suncoast Showroom in January. Guests can also enjoy free dance parties and live entertainment throughout the month.
Sunday, Jan. 14
Turner rose to fame in 1959 after being chosen out of 100 prospects to replace The Platters' original lead singer, Tony Williams. As the new lead vocalist of The Platters, Turner began touring the world with the group at age 19, performing top hits "I Love You 1000 Times," "With This Ring" and "Washed Ashore." Turner also re-recording The Platters' most celebrated hits "Only You," "The Great Pretender" and "The Magic Touch." The Platters went on to become one of the most successful vocal groups in music history.
In 1970, the legendary vocalist left The Platters to begin his solo career. Turner's vocals were featured on the soundtracks of movies "The Nutty Professor II" starring Eddie Murphy, "Hearts in Atlantis" starring Anthony Hopkins and "Prince of the City" starring Robert DeNiro.
In 2005, Consumer's Entertainment Exchange and the Doo Wop Hall of Fame presented Turner with The Lifetime Excellence in Entertainment Award. Turner was also inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Beach Music Hall of Fame for his musical contributions to The Platters.

Sommore began her career in 1994 as the first woman to host BET's "Comic View." The following year, the comedienne's fame skyrocketed after hosting Russell Simmons' "Def Comedy Jam" and "Showtime at the Apollo." That same year, she received the Richard Pryor Award for Comic of the Year. In 2000, Sommore went on to star in the "Queen of Comedy" tour, performing in front of a record-breaking audience of more than 50,000 people in Atlanta, Ga. The movie based on the tour later became the longest-running and highest-rated special in the history of Showtime Networks.
In her more than 20-year career, Sommore has become a trailblazer for women in the comedy business as one of the most successful comedians in the U.S. and abroad. Sommore wrote and produced her own comedy specials "The Queen Stands Alone" and "Chandelier Status," which both became celebrated, best-selling stand-up films. She's also headlined for several comedy tours with comedic icons Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Steve Harvey and Cedric the Entertainer. The "Queen of Comedy" has also been featured in top feature films, including "Soul Plane," "Family Reunion" and "Friday After Next."
