SINGLE BLACK FEMALE by Lisa B. Thompson (Samuel French, 2012) is a hilarious two-woman show that deftly uses comic sketches à la Saturday Night Live to look inside the lives of thirty-something middle class Black women as they search for love, clothes, and dignity in a world that fails to recognize their beauty, power and strength outside of stereotypical images in theater, film and television. The play presents a time capsule of the early 2000s at the height of the “Oprah” era, before there was a Black Bachelorette and an African American president, and the beginning of a new wave of Black cultural production that continues to challenge static representations of Blackness in the 21st century. In a climate where the voices of women across racial lines rise to challenge systemic inequality, Single Black Female offers audiences insights into the long history of Black women negotiating gender, race and class in acts of survival in order to achieve success.
