The great violinist Gil Shaham returns to the stage to perform Alban Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, dedicated “to the memory of an angel.” In keeping with that sentiment, the concert opens with Carl Ruggles’ Angels for muted brass. Franz Schubert’s magnificent Ninth Symphony, one of the greatest orchestral works of all time, provides the perfect conclusion to the program.
