This week's theatrical news spans continents and scales, but a common thread runs through many of the stories: the ongoing challenge of sustaining live theatre in a shifting cultural and economic landscape. From Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater suspending operations and Central Works announcing its closure after 36 years, to Duluth Playhouse navigating a leadership transition, regional companies across the U.S. are grappling with the pressures of rising costs and uncertain funding. Across the Atlantic, the UK theatre sector is meeting similar headwinds head-on, with the government distributing £127.8 million to 130 cultural organizations, Stagetext securing funds to expand captioning access nationwide, and SOLT and UK Theatre sounding the alarm over strains on the touring ecosystem. On the business side, Maryland has extended its theatrical production tax credit through 2032, and the Off-Broadway League is honoring a legend with a new annual award in Paul Libin's name. Meanwhile, BroadwayWorld takes stock of a 2025/26 Broadway season that packed nearly 40% of its openings into a single month, and Two River Theatre makes a quiet but telling adjustment — shifting curtain time by half an hour to better meet audiences where they are.

Why Two River Theatre Is Shifting to 7:30 PM Curtains

Two River Theatre's Director of Marketing & Audience Engagement, Mo Brady, explains why the New Jersey company will shift to a consistent 7:30 PM curtain time for all evening performances this season. Previously, show times varied between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM depending on the day. The 7:30 PM curtain is framed as a middle-ground solution — slightly earlier, but still allowing time to arrive, settle in, and enjoy a pre-show dinner without stress.

Breaking Down the 2025/26 Broadway Season

The 2025/26 Broadway season featured 34 new productions in total, with 17 opening in summer/fall and 17 in winter/spring — nearly 40% of them opening in April alone. All 41 Broadway theatres were occupied at some point during the season, and 15 productions have already closed, many of which had limited runs. Of the season's shows, Mamma Mia! posted the highest-grossing week ($2,594,204), and two productions — Art and Waiting for Godot — have announced recoupment.

Maryland Extends Theatrical Production Tax Credit Program Through 2032

Maryland has extended its Theatrical Production Tax Credit Program through June 30, 2032, via the passage of SB0440 and HB0472, building on the program's success since its launch in 2022. The program provides a 25% refundable tax credit on qualified in-state theatrical production expenses — including set design, lighting, and wardrobe — up to $2 million per production. Productions supported to date include The Wiz, Life of Pi, & Juliet, Water for Elephants, The Phantom of the Opera, and The Great Gatsby, with three more launches planned for the 2026/2027 Hippodrome Broadway Series.

Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater Cancels 2026 Season, Will Suspend Operations June 1

Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (WHAT) has cancelled its 2026 season and will suspend regular operations on June 1, 2026, as leadership works to develop a path forward for the 42-year-old professional nonprofit and its home, The Julie Harris Stage. The Wellfleet, Massachusetts company cited rising costs and an increasingly difficult fundraising environment as the drivers behind the decision. Producing Artistic Director Christopher Ostrom noted that since reopening after the pandemic in 2021, the organization has faced steadily rising costs in a challenging philanthropic environment, calling the balance of contributed and ticketing income the foundation of the regional theater model

The company, based at the Berkeley City Club, is known for producing more world premiere plays by local playwrights than any other company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Since its first collaboratively developed new play in 1997, Graves and Zvaifler have produced 37 world premieres using their signature Central Works Method.

SOLT & UK Theatre Release Statement on The State of Touring Report

SOLT and UK Theatre have welcomed Arts Council England's response to The State of Touring and its recognition that large parts of the touring ecology are now under serious strain, particularly at small and mid-scale venues, and in smaller towns and cities. They also welcomed Arts Council's commitment to develop a new Touring Service, building on the Incentivising Touring model. Co-CEO Claire Walker stated that the report makes clear the touring landscape is under real pressure, with fewer productions, shorter tours, and the sharpest declines occurring in smaller towns and cities.

Royal Shakespeare Company, Stratford East and More Receive Culture Funding From UK Government

130 cultural venues, museums, and libraries are set to benefit from a £127.8 million funding boost as part of the first wave of the UK government's Arts Everywhere Fund, aimed at ensuring broad access to arts and culture. The Creative Foundations Fund has allocated £96 million to 74 arts and cultural venues, including Theatre Royal Stratford East in London, which secured £1,750,000 to upgrade its building and essential systems. The Royal Shakespeare Company in Warwickshire is also among those receiving funding to help open up access to facilities, complete building projects, and upgrade on-site technology.

Stagetext Secures £183K Funding to Expand Captioned Theatre Across the UK

Stagetext, a deaf-led access charity, has been awarded £183,356 from the Creative Foundations Fund — part of the government's Arts Everywhere Fund — to renew captioning equipment and create a network of theatres increasing captioned performances across the UK. The three-year project, launching this month, will establish twelve hub venues across every English region, with one hub based at the Mercury Theatre in Colchester, Essex. CEO Melanie Sharpe noted that approximately 50% of Stagetext's captioning is currently delivered in London, and the funding represents a significant step toward expanding reach to smaller and regional venues.
