New Works and Community Engagement Manager - The Atlanta Opera

Position Summary

The New Works and Community Engagement Manager support the planning and implementation of new works initiatives and community engagement programming at The Atlanta Opera. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, this role works collaboratively with departments across the company to coordinate projects, support artists and partners, and ensure the smooth execution of programs and events.

A primary responsibility of this position is coordinating the New Opera Works Festival, which aims to nurture emerging creative talents from under-represented communities and offers a path into the art of opera. The Festival features two signature events: a premiere of a new chamber opera and the 96-Hour Opera Project competition showcase. The Manager assists with project logistics, artist coordination, communications, and program administration, helping ensure that initiatives are well organized and effectively delivered.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and collaborative, with strong communication skills and the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following exciting challenges and additional duties as assigned:

New Works & Festival Management

  • Manage all phases of the New Opera Works Festival, including planning, implementation, coordination, and evaluation.
  • Oversee the 96-Hour Opera Project as a core component of the Festival, including application, adjudication, residency, and performance processes.
  • Manage relationships and negotiations with composers, librettists, directors, and rights holders.
  • Track Festival and new works budgets and collaborate with the Chief of Staff on forecasting and financial oversight.
  • Manage and track rights for new works.
  • Prepare regular reports and updates for senior leadership on the status, outcomes, and impact of new works initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to draft and manage new works agreements.
  • ·Research and cultivate emerging composers, librettists, and creative collaborators.

 

Community Engagement & Ancillary Programming

  • Plan and manage community engagement initiatives and programs.
  • Coordinate ancillary programming such as talkbacks, workshops, panels, lectures, and community-based events that enhance access and audience understanding.
  • Collaborate with Education, Artistic, Marketing, and Development teams to align engagement programming with organizational priorities.
  • Serve as a liaison between artists, community partners, and internal stakeholders for engagement initiatives.
  • Support evaluation, data collection, and impact reporting for community engagement and ancillary programming.

 

Communications, Marketing & Cross-Departmental Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Communications to develop press releases, editorial content, and messaging related to the New Opera Works Festival and engagement initiatives.
  • Work with Marketing & Audience Development to promote Festival events, ancillary programming, and new works activities.
  • Collaborate on podcasts, film projects, and digital engagement initiatives as assigned.
  • Create, distribute, and analyze surveys and assessment tools for programs and events.
  • Project manage special initiatives and cross-departmental projects as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

  • · Previous new works or arts administration experience.
  • ·Excellent written and oral communication and problem-solving skills.

  • ·Self-starting and solution oriented.
  • ·Ability to maintain confidential information.
