Loosely inspired by the story of Memphis disc jockey Dewey Phillips, one of the first white DJs to play Black music on the radio, Memphis the Musical takes audiences into the underground dance clubs and radio stations of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee. At the center of the story are Huey Calhoun, a radio DJ determined to bring Rhythm & Blues to a wider audience, and Felicia Farrell, a talented Black singer ready for her moment in the spotlight.

Together, their journey unfolds against a backdrop of music, ambition, love, segregation, and social change.
