VOLKSBÜHNE BERLIN Announces Programme For October 2018

The Volksbühne Berlin has announced the programme for October 2018.

Together with composer Ben Roessler, author and director Bonn Park stages Drei Milliarden Schwestern (Three Billion Sisters), a devised opera in collaboration with P14, the Volksbühne's youth theatre group. This evening is exactly like Three Sisters by Anton Tschechow except, instead of Moscow, there's a comet racing towards the earth. Only the three billion sisters can stop it. But do they even want to?

Bonn Park is a former member of P14, he won first prize at the 2017 Berlin Theatertreffen's Stückemarkt festival for new plays, this is his first opera. There's nine singers, brazenly sorrowful music, the Jugendsinfonieorchester Berlin at the Georg-Friedrich-Händel-Gymnasium and an appearance by a star, singer Dagobert. World premiere on 12 October. Additional Performances:13 and 17 October.

Right after the world premiere of Drei Milliarden Schwestern, P14 opens the Volksbühne's doors on 13 October and treats the whole building as a stage with Mach doch! (Just do it!): They'll screen original films, dust off old texts, write new texts and stage them. They'll cook and chat, play music and dance to it, and also have a bouncy castle. The theatre belongs to P14!

In The Factory, Mohammad Al Attar and director Omar Abusaada deconstruct, based on the French corporation Lafarge's cement factory in northern Syria, one of the most disturbing aspects of the war: the alliance between money and power. A co-production with the Ruhrtriennale. Performances on 6, 14 and 19 October.

Last chance: The dance classic The show must go on by Jérôme Bel in a production with Volksbühne employees and friends. Final performance on16 October.

Also on the main stage: three concerts from the Get Well Soon Big Band (1-3.10.); Macht zur Frage concert with the Bolschewistische Kurkapelle Schwarz Rot (7.10.); book release of Das weibliche Prinzip by Meg Wolitzer (18.10.); the Scope Festival featuring indie band Peter Bjorn & John, among others; DJ Punk: Der Fotograf Daniel Josefsohn film screening (25.10.), Die große Rocko Schamoni Schau (26.10.); Rechte Räume, a discussion event with Armen Avanessian and others (27.10.); and a Passagen Gespräch conversation with Hélène Cixous and Peter Engelmann (30.10.).
