Set in the fall of 1935, Monarchs follows Mae and John Monarch as they leave behind sharecropping in the South in search of a better life in Chicago, just before the birth of their second child. However, their expectations clash with harsh realities when their teenage son encounters trouble back home in Mississippi, putting a strain on their marriage and finances. With the support of their nosy neighbors, the couple navigates the challenges of the Great Migration while striving to maintain their dreams and family bonds. The play is written by Kelundra Smith and directed by Karen Stephens.
