The Directing Fellowship at The Public Theater is a salaried, two-year position for an early-career director, conceived and led by Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali, that culminates in the fellow directing a fully produced mainstage production. The program also includes a Public Directing Group of three early-career directors selected by application; all participants receive guaranteed directing or associate directing work, rehearsal observation, involvement with the Public's artistic programs, and career mentorship from artistic staff. The inaugural fellow, Emma Rosa Went, directed Initiative in fall 2025.
