NOTE: ZORRO takes place in the early 19th Century in a Latin pueblo in California, and also in Spain. The score is a mixture of Latin, flamenco, and Gypsy music. While the show is a great swashbuckling adventure story, it also deals with the complex relationship between two brothers, as well as their culture.
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES:
MEN
RAMON
(mid 30s to late 30s, no older): He has a dangerous sexuality. As the eldest brother he is the first in line to succeed his father as alcalde of the pueblo in California. From childhood he felt unloved by his father and jealous of Diego. After becoming alcalda, he becomes evil and sadistic with a lust for blood and revenge. He will kill anyone who stands in his way – including Luisa, who he also tries to force into marriage. While the actor must present a sense of power and danger, he must also have ironic comic ability. Fencing ability or aptitude is a plus. Must be strong actor. MUST BE CAPABLE OF SINGING WELL IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH. GUITAR PLAYING IS A PLUS.
GARCIA
(late 30s to mid 40s, no older): He is a slightly rotund sergeant in Ramon's army. He is a bit innocent and foolish, but has a good heart. He is in love with Inez from the moment he sees her, but he has no experience in wooing women. Inez tries to make him strong and stand up to Ramon. COMIC CHARACTER MAN WHO SINGS WELL. BARITONE TO AN E.
WOMEN
LUISA
(early 20s): Beautiful brunette. As a child she is a tomboy and wants to be treated equal to men. As an adult she maintains her strong will and great strength and unstoppable determination. She is the one who makes Diego realize he must return to California to save their people. She becomes a revolutionary leader in order to defeat Ramon. While she loves Diego, she is confused about her attraction to Zorro, unaware that they are one and the same. MUST HAVE LYRIC VOICE PLUS STRONG MIX AND BELT.
INEZ
(mid to late 30s): A lusty, exotic, passionate, well-endowed, sensual Gypsy woman. She enjoys her life to the fullest and is devoted to Diego, as is her entire Gypsy tribe. She is eventually wooed by the sweet but bumbling sergeant Garcia, and ultimately sacrifices her life to save him. MUST BE SUPERB COMEDIENNE. A LUSTY-VOICED ALTO WHO CAN BELT A C, BUT ALSO SINGS DOWN TO A CREDIBLE LOW E.
