In Noah Diaz’s You Will Get Sick, a young man is shocked to receive a life-changing diagnosis. Overwhelmed, he turns to a stranger for help, hiring an older woman to break the news to his family and friends – thus setting into motion a series of events that will profoundly reshape both of their lives. This humane and piercing new play is a testament to the great challenges – and extraordinary joys – that come from having a body.

BREAKDOWN

All roles will be understudied.

SEEKING:

TRACK 1: Mid 20s to Mid 30s, East Asian, male. 1 is the protagonist. He holds the secret of an unspecified illness and struggles to share this secret with the people closest to him. To help break the news to his loved ones, he enlists the help of a stranger. He is stuck but not at all a passenger in his own life. He can be present even in stillness.

TRACK 2: 60 to 80 years old, White, female. 2 is the person who responds to the ad posted by 1. She helps him break the news of his illness to his loved ones and later helps him deal with his failing health. A wannabe actor trying to earn money for her acting classes. Eccentric but no schtick. New York sensibility but also carries sadness, empathy, and sorrow. Has natural comedic chops.

TRACK 3: 30 to mid 40s, Black, female. We first meet 3 as 1s sister. After learning about her brother's illness, she steps in to find someone to help manage his health. Has comedic chops and may double as multiple roles.

TRACK 4: 30 to mid 40s, White, male. 4 ultimately plays 1's ex who was once sick but has since recovered. Has comedic chops and may double as multiple roles.

TRACK 5: 20 to 30 years old, Hispanic, male. 5 is the narrator of the play. He isn't seen until he is. Has a beautiful and energetic voice.
