CONTRACT
SPT Cat. 10: $747/week
SEEKING
A culturally and ethnically diverse ensemble of strong actors who are able to sing and harmonize with an authentic folk/bluegrass sound. Excellent guitar skills also required for certain roles. Actor/singers who play stringed instruments well and can bring them to the audition are strongly encouraged to attend.
PREPARATION
Prepare a short folk/bluegrass storytelling song in the style of Woody Guthrie. You may accompany yourself on guitar or an accompanist for guitar and piano will be provided. Actors not bringing their own stringed instrument should bring a guitar chart or chord changes in your key. Actors should be prepared to sing additional songs if requested. Bring picture and resume.

First Young Man (aka The Searcher):
20s to early 30s, bari-tenor with a good ear for harmony; embodies the young Woody Guthrie, may or may not resemble Woody physically; must play excellent folk/bluegrass guitar, ability with other stringed instruments a plus; a strong actor and singer; earnest, open, affable, easy-going, and charming with a wry sense of humor; driven by a deep, restless passion for justice
Second Young Man (aka The Folksinger):
30s to 40s, bari-tenor with a good ear for harmony; embodies the middle-aged Woody Guthrie, may or may not resemble Woody physically; must play excellent folk/bluegrass guitar, ability with other stringed instruments a plus; a strong actor and singer; open, affable, easy-going, and charming with a wry sense of humor; wiser, deeper, more grounded version of The Searcher’s restless passion
Man (aka The Writer):
50s to 60s, true rumbling bass voice to low C with a good ear for harmony; embodies the older Woody Guthrie, may or may not resemble Woody physically; ability to play folk/bluegrass instruments a plus but not required; a strong actor and singer with a darkly passionate gravitas and a deep sense of social justice; the darker, more knowing, and vulnerable version of The Folksinger
Young Woman:
late 20s to 30s, versatile soprano/belt voice with a good ear for harmony; plays multiple characters throughout the show; must pluck and strum passable folk guitar, ability with other stringed instruments a plus but not required; a strong actor and singer with an earthy, playful sense of humor and an open, raw vulnerability
Woman:
40s to 50s, versatile mezzo/belt voice with a good ear for harmony; plays multiple characters throughout the show; ability to play folk/bluegrass instruments a plus but not required; a strong actor and singer with an earthy, wry, open presence, warmth, and awareness in both humor and vulnerability
