THE WARRIOR SISTERS OF WU
SYNOPSIS: Adapted from the famous Chinese classic “Romance of the Three Kingdoms; this play follows the romantic exploits and comic misadventures of two Chinese young couples, pitting two strong female warriors against two high-ranking military men, highlighting the profound changes taking place during the chaotic end-years of China’s Han Dynasty, where justice, power and gender equality were all up for grabs.
LORD QIAO (Chinese/Male/50-60s) Lord Qiao is a retired government official who used to work at the Imperial Court during the final years of China’s Han Dynasty. Widower and father to two daughters, Lord Qiao’s goal in life is to ensure his daughters are properly taken care of should anything happens to him. He is authoritative and fair but ultimately quite set in his ways.
COUSIN XIE (Chinese/Male/40-50s) - CAST. LOOKING FOR POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT ONLY. Lord Qiao’s distant cousin and the legal beneficiary of his beautiful mansion. Cousin Xie is covetous, querulous and thinks the world of himself. Often the butt of jokes, he is humorless and believes everyone is out to get him.
WAN (Chinese Female/20s) The younger daughter of Lord Qiao, Wan is a dutiful daughter (and incredible swordswoman) and at the same time someone who is astute enough to ensure peace reigns in a household of big personalities. She is in love with General Zhou Yu and hopes to marry him. Wan is also trying hard to match her sister Qing with a suitor, which isn’t an easy task. As the stress of her impending nuptials rises, her well-intentioned plan begins to unravel.
QING (Chinese/Female/20s) - CAST. LOOKING FOR POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT ONLY. The elder daughter of Lord Qiao, Qing is principled, passionate and headstrong. She is an adherent of Taoism who believes in gender equality (i.e., the balance of yin and yang). An expert swordswoman who would put any man to shame, Qing is almost as stubborn as her father and has no fear to act on her own conviction. Having a legion of admirers, she has successfully turned down all her suitors, at least, until she meets General Sun Ce.
GENERAL ZHOU YU (Chinese/Male/20-30s) Genial, wise and loving, General Zhou Yu is the head of the military battalion of the Kingdom of Wu. He is best friends with and reports to General Sun Ce. Like his betrothed Wan, he often finds himself in situations where diplomacy and a light touch are needed, although he doesn’t shy away from acting decisively when it is necessary.
GENERAL SUN CE (Chinese/Male/20-30s) - CAST. LOOKING FOR POSSIBLE REPLACEMENT ONLY. The leader of the Kingdom of Wu, General Sun Ce is a life-long military officer and a skilled swordsman. While he puts up an impassive façade in front of his men (and those that don’t know him well), General Sun Ce has a good heart and treats everyone with respect and equanimity. Ready to find love but not quite prepared to deal with its complexities, he is Mr. Darcy to Qing’s Elizabeth Bennet.
