SYNOPSIS: Okot wants nothing more than to get to the UK. Beth wants nothing more than to help him. The Jungle asks why those crossing borders in search of safety and home must face grave harm and danger. Join us as we transform Mixed Blood into the ‘The Jungle,’ based on a real life, unofficial refugee and migrant camp. The play features a cast of 20 performers and musicians portraying the hopeful and resilient refugees and volunteers from around the world. This is a fictionalized retelling of the writer’s work in the Calais Jungle migrant camp, as thousands of refugees are held in a state of political limbo, building community with one another even as outside forces conspire to destroy all they’ve built.
ALI (30s, Kurdistan) Refugee. Smuggler. “I am freedom fighter. Peshmerga. Army of Kurdistan. You know what this word means? Those who face death. Everyone here has lost their home. I am here because the Kurdish people never had one.”
BETH (18, UK) Volunteer. Idealistic. Runs the camp’s school. “I’m going to build a school. I think it’s the first idea I’ve ever had.”
BOXER (40s, UK) ALREADY CAST. Volunteer. Drunk. Gruff with a heart of gold. “If there’s one thing I know. I’ve been a shit dad. But all that’s going to change.”
CRS Officer (France) Face of the French authorities threatening to demolish the camp.
DEREK (50s, UK) Volunteer. “I don’t feel I am running away. I am running towards. Community. I’ve found things here that have all but disappeared in Britain.”
HELENE (28, Eritrea) Refugee. Christian. “While you are talking, all Eritrean women are still in tents. A group of us have to sleep in the church because a group of men tried to come in the night.”
HENRI (20s, France) Volunteer. “This isn't a city, it's a bomb.”
MAZ (20, Afghanistan) Refugee.
MOHAMMED (35, Sudan) Refugee. Former professor at the University of Khartoum. One of the leaders of the camp. Voice of unity across ethnic differences amongst the refugees. “If this is going to work, you and I must stand together.”
NORULLAH (15, Afghanistan) Refugee. Killed trying to cross the motorway. “What the fuck?! I am not bambino! We're all going to die here! We're not going to get to UK! Fuck police. Fuck Jungle! Bang!”
OKOT (17, Sudan) Refugee. Scarred. Tries to cross the English Channel every night. “I am dead. A refugee dies many times. I do not want UK. I want home. I want Sudan. But we cannot go back. No chance. There is only the trying.”
OMAR (25, Sudan) Refugee.
OMID (21, Iran) Refugee. Plays guitar and sings.
PAULA (50s, UK) ALREADY CAST. Volunteer.
SAFI (35, Syria) Refugee. Our narrator. A literature student. “I thought this was a place, but it's not. It's between places. It doesn't exist. We're in burzakh, purgatory, waiting on the Judgement, in perfect view of the motorway, for everyone to see. A warning to the world. Don't come. Don't try. Refugees, migrants, whatever we fucking are. But not people. We're between people.”
SALAR (32, Afghanistan) Refugee. Runs the café in the middle of the camp. One of the camp’s leaders. It is not our only choice. We can resist. I built this restaurant with my bare hands. Everything you see, I found. You think I will watch them destroy my home? I will not move.”
SAM (18, UK) Volunteer. Eton student who helps build housing for the refugees. “For the first time in my life, no one cares where I come from.”
YASIN (24, Iraq)
