BREAKDOWN

Roles CAST:
El Gallo – David Pittsinger
Hucklebee – Patricia Schuman
Henry – R. Bruce Connelly

LOOKING FOR:

Matt
Male, 19, sweet-voiced Baritone or Bari-Tenor, low A to high G. As a young lover, he is deeply in love, particularly with the idea of being in love. He lacks experience in the world so, while not stupid, he is naive and perhaps even foolish at times. His image of a young man in love is one of a gallant protector, meaning that he approaches some decisions with a falsified bravery that is little more than bravado. Strong acting and must move well.

Luisa
Female, Legit Soprano – High C. Seeking actress 18+ to play 16. As a young lover, she is in love. She is in love with love, the idea of love, the idea of being in love and indeed everything remotely romantic. Her dreams are more fanciful than those of Matt. Because of her particular vision of romance, she deals with the world on a particularly naive level. Strong acting and must move well.

The Mute
Male or Female, any age. The Mute serves many functions-setting props as characters need them, assisting El Gallo, and becoming the wall separating the families. While this is a non-singing, non-speaking role, the actor must have a good sense of rhythm, and dance training is a huge plus. The Mute is a speechless presence who watches and helps tell the story with his/her body or fades into the background unnoticed, when needed. The Mute is an agile physical performer with adept mime skills and dance abilities.

Bellomy
The Girl’s Mother, female 40’s-50’s, a “Character” Mezzo Soprano/Alto. She is fastidious and tidy. Bellomy would do anything to make Luisa happy—including manufacturing a false feud with her best friend and neighbor, Hucklebee, to bring their children together. She even goes as far as hiring El Gallo to stage a phony abduction. Although the scheme initially meets with success, it ultimately backfires. Must have great comic timing.

Mortimer
The Man who Dies - Male, Any Ethnicity, 30+ Does not sing much, but must be able to sing in tune and hold harmonies. Must be adept with improve and have great comic timing. Any types, ages, shapes and sizes for this role. A clownish and goofy character who specializes in dying—comically elaborate death scenes. Mortimer and his partner, Henry, are hired by El Gallo to assist in the phony abduction of Luisa.
