BREAKDOWN

THE EVOLUTION OF MANN is a new musical comedy that centers on Henry Mann – a thirty-something year-old single New Yorker given to outrageous fantasies who is eager to settle down. As the show opens, Henry has just attended 12 weddings in less than a year (including his dad’s). When Henry receives an invitation to his ex- fiancée's wedding (the wasp-Goddess Sheila) he realizes he has to step up his game in order to find the perfect soulmate to accompany him to the impending event.

Henry shares a small apartment with his wryly candid best friend, Gwen, who is adjusting to being separated from her wife. All the other women in Henry’s life (his dates, his impulsive mother, and -- in a brief cameo -- Daisy Buchanan) are played by a single actress, giving EVOLUTION a cast of three.

As the show progresses, Henry flip-flops between Tamar, a downtown woman who works in PR and Christine, a sweet third-grade teacher with a barely perceptible unibrow. At the same time, Henry and Gwen work nights as legal-assistants to support their creative dreams: a one-woman show for Gwen that’s very “downtown, and The Green Light, Henry's Latin-flavored musical based on The Great Gatsby.

In 90 hilarious and surprisingly poignant minutes, the audience sees Henry evolve from a hapless guy with poor judgement into a full-fledged mensch who is ready to settle down and cherish the unromantic things -- the title of our penultimate song which espouses the work necessary for a relationship to stand

SEEKING

ACTOR 2:
GWEN (Principal)
Woman in her early thirties. A gay woman in the midst of a breakup, Gwen is Henry’s best friend and roommate. She is an avant-garde performance artist who, like Henry, works as a proofreader at a law firm. While trying to get her own life together, she has an instinct about what Henry needs - and isn’t afraid to express it. Mezzo with a strong mix and belt.

ACTOR 3:
TAMAR/CHRISTINE/SHEILAH/etc. (Principal)
Woman in her late twenties/early thirties to play a variety of roles, including Henry’s three love interests: a sweet girl next door, a downtown hipster, and a wasp goddess, as well as the protagonist’s forward Jewish mother, The Great Gatsby’s Daisy Buchanan, and more. Extremely versatile and dynamic with supreme comedic chops. Mezzo with a strong mix and belt.

The following role has been CAST. Seeking actors for possible/future replacements/understudies

ACTOR 1:
(Role CAST) HENRY MANN (Principal) Mann in his early thirties. A fledgling writer who's desperate to find a wife to bring to his ex-fiancée's wedding. He is a hapless and flawed, but utterly sweet and charming, thirty-two-year-old. He sometimes makes rash decisions at the expense of others, but is always well-intentioned, and often projects into the future rather than living fully in the moment. A modern day Walter Mitty who is looking for love in the big city. High baritone.
