BREAKDOWN
THE 39 STEPS
SYNOPSIS
A missing spy. A mysterious woman. A man on the run. When an ordinary man stops to help a stranger, he’s catapulted into a high-speed chase across the Scottish countryside — with only his wits (and a trench coat) to survive. This fast-paced farce features over 150 characters played by just four actors in a whirlwind of costume changes, clever staging, and nonstop laughs. A comic thriller at its best, The 39 Steps is a wildly inventive tale of mistaken identity, espionage, and split-second decisions that change everything.
SEEKING
RICHARD HANNAY
This role has already been cast. (Male, 50s–60s) A seemingly ordinary man who finds himself embroiled in a thrilling adventure and is mistakenly accused of murder. Able to do an English accent.
THE WOMAN
(Female, 30s–60s. Plays Annabella, Pamela, and Margaret.) Three central roles that drive the story:
- Annabella – glamorous, intense, secretive; carries an air of danger and urgency (German dialect)
- Pamela – sharp, articulate, poised; meets chaos with wit, intelligence, and a no-nonsense attitude (British RP dialect)
- Margaret – gentle, soft-spoken, compassionate; a quiet soul living a small, isolated life (Scottish dialect)
CLOWN 1
(Any gender identification, 30s–60s.) Part of a two-person team responsible for creating a wide array of characters throughout the play. Roles range from police and villains to bystanders, hotel proprietors, train workers, and many more, often shifting rapidly between them. Inventive, quick on their feet, and comfortable with broad comedy, physical humor, and crisp timing. Requires various British regional dialects as needed for character changes, including Scottish and British RP. The characters transition quickly in voice and demeanor.
CLOWN 2
(Any gender identification, 30s–60s.) Works in tandem with Clown 1 to portray dozens of characters of varying types and temperaments. Characters shift from scene to scene with versatility and a strong sense of play. Comfortable with quick changes, physical comedy, and various British regional dialects as needed for character changes, including Scottish and British RP.
