Preparation
Please prepare a short monologue OR a short song OR a one-minute
monologue and 16 bars of a song. Auditions may not exceed 3 minutes.

Accompanist will be provided.

Please bring TWO (2) copies of your headshot and resume.

Paul
35-50, Male: Excellent actor/singer, tenor/baritone. A kind and devoted divorced Dad who enters the Cake Off to prove to his young son there’s no shame in liking to bake. He’s a data analyst with OCD and his baking style reflects this - he’s anxious, timid and methodical; that is until his surprising success at the contest gives him a confidence and bravado he never knew he had. He’s a leading man who doesn’t know it yet. Must be comically adept and also interested in exploring the deeper dimensions of a character who’s struggling to win back the love of his child.

Contest emcee/judge/mascot/contestants/multiple other roles:
Male, mid 20s-40s. Excellent actor/singer, tenor/baritone, who can play multiple and very varied roles (young and old, male and female, Northern and Southern, etc.). Must be a real chameleon and physical comedian who can change characters instantly and play a dozen different roles. Performer will be portraying numerous and highly varied Cake Off contestants - the emcee of the contest, one or more judges, the company mascot (like the Pillsbury Doughboy) and numerous other parts. Must be comedically adept but also be able to find the humanity and dignity of all the characters.

Puerto Rican, 25 to 35, Female: Feisty and assertive. She dispenses older sister advice to Maria and tries to shield her from the dangers of the gangs. Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's friend. Must have strong dance technique & be proficient in ballet & jazz.

Anybodys
15 to 18, Female: A spunky tomboy who is desperate to become a member of the Jets. The other Jets mock her for her ambitions, but generally appreciate her company. Full of energy and heart. Must have strong dance technique & be proficient in ballet & jazz.

Bernardo
Puerto Rican, 20 to 35, Male: A proud, strong, handsome Puerto Rican man. Bernardo seeks to carve out territory as a sense of identity for he and his friends. Maria's brother and Anita's boyfriend. Leader of the Sharks. Must have strong dance technique & be proficient in ballet & jazz.

Chino
Puerto Rican, 18-25, Male: An angry and, at times, naive Shark who turns murderous and vengeful. Suitor to Maria and friend of Bernardo's. Must have strong dance technique & be proficient in ballet & jazz.

Detective Schrank
40 to 55, Male. A local police detective frustrated by the ongoing violence between the Jets and Sharks. Blunt, brash, and unapologetic.

Doc
60 to 75, Male: The owner of the candy store where the Jets hang out. He tries to guide the Jets youthful angst and provides a safe haven for Tony. Old fashioned and wise in his ways.

Maria
Puerto Rican, 18 to 21, Female: A hopeless romantic and innocent young girl. She falls in love with Tony and finds herself at the center of the violent conflict between the two gangs. Bernardo's sister. Puerto Rican.

Officer Krupke
30 to 60s, Male: The local beat cop. He has no patience for the gangs conflict and tries to keep tensions from errupting between them. Regularly mocked by the local gangs.

Riff
18-30, Male: A spritely, quick-tempered leader. He seeks to eliminate the Sharks and establish his own gang's dominance. Tony's best friend, he is eventually murdered by Bernardo. Must have strong dance technique & be proficient in ballet & jazz.

Tony
25-30, Male: A romantic young man and former leader of the Jets, he has found a new lifestyle now. Tony finds himself violently torn between his friendships and love. Falls in love to Maria and meets an untimely death. Genuinely sweet and sincere.

Ensemble

50 to 65, Male: Father to Addison and Wilson. On his deathbed, he tells his sons to embrace the opportunities of the new world. Proud. Nostalgic. Range: A3 - E5

Charlotte
Caucasian, 20s, Female: The daughter of Howard and Lucinda. Fiercely intelligent, articulate and funny, she is both emotionally spikey and fragile, combative and needy. She is insistent and demanding, yet your heart goes out to her. She is relentless and rigorous in her pursuit of her identity and her place in the world.

Jonny
African American, 20s, Male: A bit of an outsider who feels like he doesn’t fit in. Highly intelligent, very sensitive, articulate, but emotionally hidden. A young man with secrets, who has spent much of his life afraid to reveal his true self.

Howard
Caucasian, 50s, Male: A very successful crime novelist, who feels has never written the great American opus he has inside him, Howard is a frustrated, brilliant, witty, egocentric, relentlessly charismatic and intellectual man. Obsessed with his writing life but loves his daughter more than his work - although he loves his work more than his wife. Howard is a transplant to the American South where he alternately revels in and resents his outsider status.

Lucinda
Caucasian, 50s, Female: The most desired girl at Yale 25 years ago - a free spirited, blue-blooded Southern beauty - Lucinda made a maverick choice in husband when she was too young to know better and which she has lived to regret. Her coping mechanisms include self-medication, a bitter wit, and a steely exterior protecting a very damaged and private woman inside. As Lucinda’s daughter starts to fight for her own emotional independence, Lucinda finds herself going on an unexpected and equally insistent journey of self-discovery and the girl she used to be starts to re-emerge.
