SEEKING

Equity actors for roles in ROE by Lisa Loomer (see breakdown).

Atlanta-based actors encouraged to submit.

Full vaccination against COVID-19, as defined by the CDC, is required of all Horizon Theatre employees.


INSTRUCTIONS

Please prepare a contemporary monologue or two or more sides from the show. Select pieces that show your character range (type, age) as most actors in Roe play multiple roles. Please submit / find the sides at https://airtable.com/shrXcn8yF23fAeA3M .

BREAKDOWN

SARAH WEDDINGTON (Female, white) Ages from 20-70 years old. 20's in Act One, 40's in Act Two, a few moments in her 60s-70s. A feminist, a great lawyer, charming, brilliant, ladylike, and composed. Beautiful with great hair. Originally from Texas.

NORMA McCORVEY (Female, white) Ages 20-60 years old. 20's in Act One, 40's in Act Two, a few minutes in her 60's. The playwright describes her as a funny, angry, hard drinking and drugging, lesbian Texan, desperate at heart. Norma is short, and they called her Pixie.

CONNIE GONZALEZ/OFELIA/Ensemble (Female, Latinx) CONNIE, Ages 40s-60s, she is 40's in Act One, 60's in Act Two. She is the heart of the play, even-handed, Tex-Mex with enormous patience and few words. Norma’s partner, loyal, loving and even wise. OFELIA, 40s, Sarah’s Mexican housekeeper and devout Catholic.

AILEEN/BARBARA/UMA/FLO KENNEDY/ENSEMBLE (Female, Late 20’s-30’s, Black) Ensemble roles. Barbara, Black well-educated feminist. Aileen, down-to-earth, working class, Black lesbian nurse. Uma, a Texas reporter. Flo Kennedy, iconic feminist lawyer and civil rights activist.

LINDA COFFEE/JUDY/ELEANOR SMEAL/ENSEMBLE (Female, Late 20’s-30’s, white) Great comic ability and flexibility. Many characters within the ensemble. Linda, a shy, bright, awkward, earnest lawyer. Judy, a true feminist, strong. Peggy, a Christian reporter. Eleanor Smeal, feminist.

ROXY (Female, Early 20’s, Afro-Latinx/Black) working class college student, bright, a truth seeker, full of heart. Brilliant, vulnerable, must have access to emotional availability.

RONDA MACKEY/HELEN/GLORIA ALLRED/HOLLY HUNTER/ENSEMBLE (Female, white) Great comic ability and flexibility. Many characters within the ensemble. Ronda, 30s, pretty, earnest, a true believer and good Christian. Helen, a budding feminist, eager to get it right. Gloria Allred, 40's, the feminist lawyer, quite strong. Holly Hunter, the actress.

MOLLY/MARY/KATE MICHAELMAN/MARY GILMOUR/ENSEMBLE (Female, white) Great comic ability and flexibility. Many characters within the ensemble. Molly, 40s-50s middle class, flirting with feminism. Mary, 50s, Norma’s mother, poor. Kate, 40s Feminist. Mary G, a speech teacher.

EMILY (Female, 7-12 years old, white) Emily, Ronda’s daughter, a happy, feisty angel. Sees the best and wants the best for people including Norma. Thinks church is a happy and loving place.

FLIP/RON/JAY FLOYD/MICHAEL MANHEIM/ENSEMBLE (Male, white) Great comic and character abilities. Additional ensemble roles. Flip is 40's, the head of Operation Rescue. Passionate, fiery, folksy, earnest, a good-looking guy and quite a preacher who truly believes in his cause. Warm with Southern charm. Ron Weddington (bright, ambitious lawyer), Michael Manheim (Hollywood TV producer, 40s), Jay Floyd (a lawyer, jovial, but not as brilliant as he’d like).

HENRY MCCLUSKY/ROBERT FLOWERS/ENSEMBLE (Male, 40-50 years old, white) Charming, funny, likeable, characters middle to upper middle class. Henry, and adoption lawyer, compassionate, closeted gay. Robert Flowers, a lawyer, passionately pro-life.

JUSTICE BLACKMUN/FRED FRIENDLY/FRED GILMOUR/WADE/ENSEMBLE (Male, 50’s-60’s, white) Characters of different class and background. Blackmun, deliberate, torn and thoughtful, strong moral center. Fred Gilmour, a speech teacher. Fred Friendly, used to run CBS. Henry Wade, conservative Dallas District Attorney, in the play, wears a cowboy hat and chews tobacco.
