Breakdown
Seeking:
GEORGE
Male, late 20s-30s. A small sharp-faced farm hand. George is Lennie’s caretaker. He is a good natured man but can get very frustrated with Lennie because of Lennie’s childlike nature. George is also very protective of Lennie and can get easily angered if Lennie gets picked on or threatened by someone else. George’s life is overly problematic because of his having to take care of Lennie but he accepts the responsibility. George is also looking to have the American Dream, (A place of their own).
LENNY
Male late 20s-30s. George’s huge, not bright, companion. The text indicates that Lennie is mentally challenged and acts very childlike. Due to this childlike mentality, Lennie, although he has no intention of hurting anyone, at times inadvertently harms animals and people because of his enormous size and strength. Lennie relies completely on George for his care.
SLIM
Male. He is a quiet but observant man who is a jerk-line skinner, a master workman. Slim is the wise and true authority figure of the ranch hands. The ranch hands listen to the Boss and Curley because they have to, but they listen to Slim because they respect him as a worker and as a person. Slim is the only character on the ranch that understands the bond between Lennie and George.
CANDY
Male,60-70. Candy is the eldest worker on the ranch. (An old swamper.) He lost one of his hands in an accident. Candy has one big fear and that is that when he outlives his usefulness on the ranch he will be kicked off and have no place to go. Candy’s most loyal companion is his old dog to whom he is incredibly attached.
THE BOSS
Male, 40-50s, superintendent of the ranch and is very curious and suspicious about the relationship between George and Lennie.
CURLEY
Male, 30s, the Boss’s son. Curley is the antagonist of the story. Being the Boss’s son, he treats the ranch hands in a very condescending manner. Curly is short in stature and is angered and provoked by anyone who is bigger than he. He is recently married and very mistrusting of his new wife. Curly is disliked by all of the workers on the ranch.
CURLEY’S WIFE
Female, 20-30 She is the only female character that appears in the story. This unnamed wife of Curley is looked upon by the ranch hands as a “tart” and with aversion. It is implied that she is constantly seeking the attention of the workers. Like so many others on the ranch, she is lonely and regretful of her marriage to Curly who treats her horribly.
CARLSON
Male, late 20-40, a ranch hand. He is sort of second in command to Slim. Carlson at first seems to be a bitter, self-centered man. He is the ranch hand that suggests that Candy’s dog should be put down.
WHIT
Male, 20-30, a ranch hand who befriends George and Lennie when they arrive.
CROOKS
Black Male, late 30-50, a stable buck. Crooks gets his name from his crooked back. Proud, bitter, talented, smart, and caustically funny, he is isolated, both physically and emotionally, from the other men because of the color of his skin.
