BREAKDOWN

Excerpts from the 1818 edition of Frankenstein, music, and dance interwoven with Mary Shelly’s letters and diaries chronicle Mary’s struggle with motherhood, loss of her children, loneliness and rejection, alongside the parallel narrative in her writings. Featuring Bach-inspired music of the 19th century, including the Chaconne (Bach-Busoni) the Prelude in B minor (Bach-Siloti), the organ prelude on the B-A-C-H motive by Liszt, in addition to arias from Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, songs by Schubert, and Liszt’s variations on Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, among others works.

SEEKING:

[MARY SHELLEY / AGATHA]
Female, 20s-early 30s.

  • MARY SHELLEY is the passionate, tormented author of ‘Frankenstein’. Struggling depression, loneliness, as well as the deaths of her new born and miscarried children, Mary set about writing her classic novel to process her thoughts. Deeply empathic and thoughtful, she is an off-beat heroine and woman ahead of her time.
  • AGATHA is a character in ‘Frankenstein’. She is De Lacey’s daughter. High class, but compassionate and deeply sensitive. The Monster sees her as a sister figure.

[PERCY SHELLEY / VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN / FELIX]
Male, 20s-30s.

  • PERCY SHELLEY is Mary’s husband and the great love of her life. Handsome and charming, he is also a brilliant writer and poet. Matches Mary in intellect and cares deeply for her.
  • VICTOR is the eponymous protagonist of Mary Shelley’s classic novel. An intensely driven and passionate scientist toiling to create new life, resulting in the famous Frankenstein’s Monster.
  • FELIX is a character in ‘Frankenstein’. He is De Lacey’s son. Well groomed and upstanding; empathetic and nurturing. Fiercely protective of his father, he attacks the Monster when he feels threatened.

[DE LACEY / WILLIAM GODWIN]
Male, 50s-60s.

  • DE LACEY is a character in ‘Frankenstein’. He is an old blind man that the Monster spies on and looks to as a father figure. He is warm, gentle and wise.
  • WILLIAM GODWIN is Mary’s father. An intellectual who struggles to understand Mary’s depression and restlessness.

[CHILDREN]
Boys, 8-12. Young children to play a variety of roles, including Mary’s son PERCY FLORENCE SHELLEY; Victor Frankenstein’s son, WILLIAM, who dies at the hand of the Monster, and YOUNG CHILDREN that torment Frankenstein’s Monster in the forest within the novel.
