SEEKING

Seeking Equity actors for 2019 season. Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival operates in a rotating repertory schedule. Most but not all actors, will be cast in a minimum of two (2) productions

Also seeking One Equity Production Stage Manager and One Equity Stage Manager. SMs should check separate SM notice on Casting Call for information to submit for consideration.

PREPARATION

Prepare two contrasting monologues, at least one by Shakespeare.
Bring picture and resume. Should you wish to be considered for Into the Woods, one monologue and also a short selection from Sondheim for the appropriate role you would like to be considered for. Accompanist provided.

Total audition time not to exceed 2 minutes.

BENEDICK in Much Ado About Nothing - A soldier from Padua and friend of Don Pedro and Claudio. Sharp witted, and has vowed he will never marry. Quick to act on belief and feeling.

PHILARIO/ CAIUS LUCIUS in Cymbeline - a Roman General; intelligent, civil, and respectful; an aristocrat who performs his duties with the greatest of care and nobility; a law-abiding company man

ACTOR 2
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male 20s/30s)

POSTHUMUS in Cymbeline - Imogen's true love, banished for secretly marrying her. After being fooled into thinking she is unfaithful, he attempts to have Imogen murdered and then joins the Roman forces. Unmoored, and therefore fragile, responding on impulse to whatever is coming towards him.

ACTOR 3
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male 50s/60s)

LEONATO in Much Ado About Nothing - Governor of Messina, father to Hero and uncle to Beatrice. Commanding and powerful, but also possessing a playful side. Capable of great gentleness and humility and terrible rage.

CYMBELINE/JUPITER in Cymbeline - King of Britain and the father of Imogen. Quick-tempered and used to having his own way.

ACTOR 4
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male, 30s/40s)

DON PEDRO in Much Ado About Nothing - Prince of Aragon, Benedick’s contemporary and commander. Wealthy, privileged, charming, and courteous, possesses an innate sense of power and authority, which he wears with great ease, a man comfortable in his own skin.

IACHAMO in Cymbeline - A Roman lord and an acquaintance of Posthumus. Sly and manipulative, he bets Posthumus that he can seduce Imogen. Substantial ego, impulsive, ironic sense of humor.

ACTOR 5
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male, 30s/40s)

DOGBERRY in Much Ado About Nothing - Constable of Messina, dedicated, determined, but clumsy, proud, and sincere. A role for an actor with great physical and verbal comedic skill.

BELARIUS in Cymbeline - Former warrior, still physically strong, in his youth was quick to revenge, still might hold a grudge, makes up for his sins by devotedly foster fathering

ACTOR 6
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING:(Male, 50s/60s)

ANTONIO in Much Ado About Nothing - Leonato’s older brother, although he is perhaps past his physical prime, he is still fierce and commanding, has a passionate temper that sometimes overwhelms him.

PISANIO in Cymbeline - The servant to Posthumus; the conscience of the play; sly, watchful. Well intentioned but fallible.

ACTOR 7
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: CAST - JASON O’CONNELL (Male, 30s/40s)

CYRANO in Cyrano - A brilliant thinker, poet, and swordsman. A man of integrity who cannot lie or compromise himself.

NARRATOR/MYSTERIOUS MAN in Into the Woods - a soulful, wise, playful, intelligent actor who can portray a philosopher/trickster with depth and humor; baritone.

ACTOR 8
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male, 20s-30s)

CHRISTIAN, AS CAST in Cyrano - Noble, brave, passionate, sincere; possesses great emotional intelligence, but is at a loss when it comes to words and wit. Also plays BELLEROSE (the gruff theatre owner) and SISTER MARTHE (a wise and witty nun).

RAPUNZEL’S PRINCE/LUCINDA in Into the Woods - a confident, funny, flexible, physical, robust performer who can play multiple roles and portray authentic maturity and depth; bari-tenor.

ACTOR 9
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Male, 40s-50s)

DEGUICHE, in Cyrano - A vain nobleman of high military rank and questionable moral fiber. His passion for Roxane is as potent as his disdain for Cyrano. Also plays RAGUENEAU (a sweet tempered, poetry-loving pastry chef) as well as MONTFLEURY (an overwrought classical actor), and CADET 1.

BAKER in Into the Woods - An intelligent, sensitive actor, must have great comic skills and emotional vulnerability; baritone.

ACTOR 10
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Female, 30s)

BEATRICE in Much Ado About Nothing - The niece of Leonato and cousin and confidant of Hero. Beatrice is the perfect foil for Benedick, whom she eventually falls in love with and marries. Beatrice shows liveliness, humor and a keen intelligence; indeed her power of repartee is probably excelled by no other Shakespearean character.

QUEEN in Cymbeline - Relishes her royal role, cunning, knows how to get what she wants, feigns charm, props up and advances her only son, Cloten

ACTOR 11
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Female, 20s/30s)

HERO in Much Ado About Nothing - Cousin to Beatrice, daughter of Leonato, lovely, charming, gentle, kind, but has backbone, in love with Claudio, innocent of any wrongdoing, she is slandered by Claudio’s enemies and is devastated by the attacks on her good name.

IMOGEN in Cymbeline - Princess, and daughter to Cymbeline. Royal, noble, passionate, strong, knows her own mind, beyond in love with Posthumus, newly married, indefatigable, animated by faith in herself, her love, the possibility of a better world.

ACTOR 12
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Female, 20s-30s)

ROXANNA, in Cyrano - Fiercely intelligent, funny, passionate, brave, poetic, soulful. A kindred spirit with the man Cyrano is and the man she imagines Christian to be. Also plays the LITTLE GIRL and CADET 2.

CINDERELLA in Into the Woods - a great comic actress with intelligence, depth, sweetness and openness who can portray a young woman with an identity crisis; soprano.

ACTOR 13
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Female, 30s-50s)

LA BRET, in Cyrano - Cyrano’s loyal friend and voice of reason; a hard-fighting, hard-drinking soldier and songwriter with powerful enemies. Also plays the DUENNA (Roxane's sassy chaperone), LISE (Ragueneau’s frayed and frustrated wife), and the MONK.

JACK’S MOTHER/STEPMOTHER in Into the Woods - a funny, wry, flexible actress capable of embodying desperation and maternal love; soprano or alto.

BAKER’S WIFE in Into the Woods - An intelligent, confident actress with a comic and witty sensibility, an optimistic energy; soprano/mix/belt.

ACTOR 16
TO PLAY THE FOLLOWING: (Female early Late 30s-50s)

THE WITCH in Into the Woods - A strong actress who is able to physically and vocally interpret the role, needs to transition from being an ugly, old, extremely sarcastic & aggressive character who ultimately relinquishes her power for beauty and youth. mezzo soprano with strong belt.
