Breakdown

The play takes place in 1979.

JACK
A retired doctor in his mid-50s still suffering the guilt over his arrest during his youth, for having , seemingly, fled the country to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War. In actuality, Jack had reluctantly gone to convince his best friend, Peter, to return to the United States and was ultimately arrested for his efforts.

PETER
A newspaper editor who , though now estranged, was Jack's best friend and baseball team mate in their youth. Teetering on the brink of alcoholism, he is suffering his own guilt for having enticed Jack to come to Canada. Unlike Jack, Peter's draft notice never came up so his reputation remained intact.

KAY
Jack's wife and a former concert pianist who grew up in Nazi Germany. She has abandoned her career in recent years in large part to deal with her husband's growing anxieties.

LISA
A brash and ambitious young newspaper reporter in her early 20s who is dismissive of her boss, Peter, and bent on destroying Jack. Her disposition is dictated by a tragedy that occurred during her youth.

IRWIN
Jack's accountant and in his late 60s. He serves as a confidant to Jack.
