Breakdown
NOTE: HOLLER IF YA HEAR ME is a new musical inspired by the work of Tupac Shakur. Set present-day in the inner city streets (My Block) of a Mid-western industrial city, HOLLER follows two childhood friends (JOHN and VERTUS) and their friends, relatives and adversaries as they struggle to reconcile the challenges and realities of their daily lives with their hopes, dreams and ambitions. ALL ACTORS MUST BE TERRIFIC RAPPERS AND SINGERS. SEEKING ONE ACTOR FOR EACH OF THE FOLLOWING ROLES: JOHN CAVINESS Male, mid to late 20s, African American. Two strikes, fresh out of jail, and looking to make a clean start. Loyal, trustworthy, determined – he has learned from his mistakes and wants to make a fruitful and peaceful life for himself. Struggling with leaving behind the ghosts of his past and remaining loyal to those he loves, even if it’s at a cost. VERTUS WESTON Male, mid to late 20s, African American. JOHN’s best friend; stayed out of trouble as a comic book-reading kid until he started hanging with JOHN. Took over as the King of My Block when JOHN went to jail. Currently selling drugs but has bigger dreams for himself. Cares deeply about the people in his life but doesn’t always know how to show it or act it. BRIAN “GRIFFY” GRIFFIN Male, early 20s. Caucasian. Mechanic running his father’s auto body shop in a predominantly black neighborhood. A good-natured, funny kid with good intentions, though he does harbor feelings of anger over the violent street death of his friend BENNY. ACTOR MUST PLAY GUITAR VERY WELL. ANDREA WESTON Female, mid 40s – mid-50s, African American. VERTUS’ loving but no bulls**t mother. Loves unconditionally, works tirelessly; she’s seen and been through a lot in her life. Worries for the future of her son. CORINNE Female, mid to late 20s, African American. JOHN”s ex-girlfriend, now with VERTUS. Beautiful, loving and confident, but still harboring feelings for JOHN and resentment over his treatment of her after he went to prison. Nobody’s fool, CORRINE is learning how to stand her ground and ask for what she feels she deserves. STREET PREACHER Male, 40s – 50, African American. Older man living on the streets, preaching peace and the Bible through a bullhorn. May not seem “all there”, but speaks passionately and constantly about the need for peace, love and God in his dangerous and violent neighborhood. ANTHONY Male, 19, African American. Best friend of Vertus’ deceased brother BENNY. A sensitive and thoughtful soul, ANTHONY is at a crossroads: wanting and envisioning change but growing increasingly aware of and tempted by the violent realities of inner city life. Actor must be a terrific actor and rapper. NUNN Male, mid to late 20s, African American. One of VERTUS’ two man crew. Pragmatic, steely and unsentimental older-brother type; a tough guy who can take care of himself and who recognizes when things heat up that it might be best to disappear from the hood. DARIUS male, early to mid 20s, African American. The other of VERTUS’ two man crew. Used to idolize JOHN when he was a kid. A cocksure hothead who is quick to pull his weapon. Acts like he is next in line to be the King of My Block. REGGIE Male, late teens – early 20’s, African American. Fresh out of high school. A Young Soulja. Friend of Nunn, Anthony and Darius. Strong comic skills. LEMAR Male, late teens – early 20s, African American. Fresh out of high school. A Young Soulja. Friend of Nunn, Anthony and Darius. Strong comic skills.
