THE UNTRANSLATABLE SECRETS OF NIKKI CORONA by Jose Rivera

Abril/Nikki – early 30s, Latina, soulful and pretty she has a dark complexion with long brown hair, large, wounded eyes. Nikki, her twin sister, a high school teacher, has been grieving nearly nonstop for the past nine months.

Maren/Lisandra – early 30s, beautiful, slender, intense, dark hair and eyes, a mixture of perfect confidence and vulnerability. From her voice to her make-up and clothes, to her physical manner, there’s something about her that seems like she just teleported from the 1940s. Lisandra is sexy with long blond hair and tatoos

Orlando – mid-30s, deeply sensitive eyes, bright, boyish, in the late stages of a terminal cancer. Though he’s ravaged by chemo and has trouble breathing, he has a fierce spirit.

Manny/Priest/Bernardo/Eldon – 40s, Manny is a male nurse, Bernardo is a Latino in full NYC police riot gear, and Eldon is British, dressed in late 19th century clothes. A variety of roles

Noelle/Paloma/Bobbi/Maria Sol – 30s, Noelle is Orlando’s younger sister, Latina, intense, strong, a single mother of three, Paloma is an Argentine Doctor, Bobbi is preppy and well-dressed, Maria Sol is in her 50s, expensively dressed a socialite and media star. Also a variety of roles.

NAT KING COLE: AF AM 30's-early 40's suave and debonair but underneath this veneer a quiet rage. Tap Dances, Singing is a dead ringer for Nat King Cole himself.

SAMMY DAVIS JR: AF AM 30's-early 40's. Provacateur. Witty, Physical Comedy Chops. Extraordinary Tap Dancing Skills. Singing is dead ringer for Sammy Davis Jr.

EARTHA KITT and OTHERS: AF AM late 20's- early 30's Sultry and able to sing like Eartha and Natalie Cole. Comedic chops a plus.

BILLY PRESTON AND OTHERS: AF AM 12-15 years old. Singer. A typical l1957 kid. An earnestness to him.

STAGE MANAGER AND OTHERS: Caucasian. Singer. Tenor. 20's-early 30's. Dutiful Stage Manager. Sharp.

PRODUCER AND OTHERS: 40's-Early 50's. Caucasian, Singer. Baritone. He plays the heavy. The Man 19'50's slick Hollywood Producer. Duplicitous.

PERLINA AND OTHERS: 30's-50's Extraordinary Singer. Plays Nat's mother and others. Powerful presence.

BETTY HUTTON, PEGGY LEE AND OTHERS: Caucasian. late 20's-30's. Extraordinary Singer.

CANDY AND OTHER'S: 40's-50's. Caucasian. Comedic. Gravely voiced Singer. An old school BROAD'

BLACK SUPER HERO MAGIC MAMA by Inda Craig-Galvan

SABRINA JACKSON: F, 40, Black. No-nonsense, loving mother. She will cut you down if need be.

TRAMARION JACKSON: M, 14, Black. Sabrina’s son. Academically and artistically gifted. Loyal to his best friend Flat Joe.

FLAT JOE/JOSEPH A. HUGHES: M, 14, Black. At 14, he hardly even notices anymore when women clutch their purses in elevators. An artist skilled beyond his years and circumstances.

LENA EVERS: F, 32, Black. Sabrina's younger sister and Tramarion's aunt. Community-minded, professional, stylish. Has always benefitted from/relied on being the younger sister.

COACH COREY BRACKETT: M, 40, Black. Part-time teacher/academic coach; part-time philosopher. Everybody’s favorite cool teacher.

DAVE LESTER: M, 40, White. A Chicago cop with a clean record. He’s soooo over the bandwagon Cubs fans. Sincerely wants to protect and serve.

CONNIE: F, 35, Asian-American. Connie’s news anchor position was hard-won and she enjoys the challenges. She can exploit the hell out of a story, but it’s wearing on her.

TOM BLACKMAN: M, 40, Black. An ambitious, hungry field reporter. He’s proud of the fact that you’d never guess he grew up on the Southside of Chicago.

GREEN/HOLMES 40s-50s. Male. Green is a scholar and Sherlock Holmes enthusiast. He has a gentle demeanor, but clicks in with passion at times of intensity.

CONAN DOYLE/DOYLEAN LEADER/CHIEF INVESTIGATOR (Police Chief) 30s-50s. Male. Would ideally resemble the real Conan Doyle. An organized mind and an inner sadness.

WATSON/IRENE ADLER MAN/HENRY 30s-40s. Male. Insightful and helpful, Watson is SH’s right-hand as they attempt to solve the murder. – Role is cast

THE AMERICAN/GUY AT BAR/GIBNER/DONALD/CHESTER/GEPPETTO/ANTOINETTE 40s-50s. Male. Mysterious and malevolent, the American has an eerie and unsettling quality.

TOUIE/CAROL/JEAN/CHRISTIE’S WOMAN/POLICEMAN 1, 3/CORONER/GREEN’S MOTHER 40s. Female. Touie Conan Doyle is a pugnacious force; Jean is a dry, elderly Brit.

SMITH/TAXI DRIVER/DENTIST/POLICEMAN, POLICEMAN 2,4/SCIRARD/EDWIN 30s-50s. Exasperated and proper, Smith was Conan Doyle’s publisher until Conan Doyle killed Holmes. Sharp and reasonable. Role is cast.
