PREPARATION

Please prepare two brief contrasting monologues. OR, if you are singing, please prepare one monologue and a musical theatre song appropriate for our season's musicals that show your strengths as a singer. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring your sheet music (clearly marked for start/stop/tempos, etc.) AND a headshot & resume stapled together.

STAR SPANGLED GIRL

  • ANDY HOBART: Male. Mid/Late 20s. Publisher of a political magazine called “Fallout.” He has the worried look of a man twice his age. He is a dedicated, idealistic, cynic charged with the energy of an angry generation.
  • NORMAN CORNELL: Male. Mid/20s. Andy’s business partner. Although he is the brain and intellect behind “Fallout,” when he is away from the typewriter, he is an incorrigible adolescent.
  • SOPHIE RAUSCHMEYER: Female. Early/mid 20s. A lovely, young blonde. The prototype of an all-American girl. An Olympic swimmer from Arkansas who speaks with an Arkansas drawl.

Note: “Plaid Tidings” is a revue of the close harmony ‘guy groups (e.g. The Four Aces, The Four Freshmen) that reached the height of their popularity during the 1950s. Seeking a diverse group of strong singer/actors with a great ear for harmonies and who are comfortable with movement.

  • SPARKY: [CAST] 20s Male. Baritone. The clown, the imp, the scamp. The cut-up of the group.
  • JINX: [CAST] 20s. Male. Tenor. The shy one. He is terrified and doesn’t always remember what song is next.
  • SMUDGE: [CAST] 20s. Male. Bass. The worrier. He worries about the props, the running order, and assumes the audience won’t like him.

  • MONA KENT: Female. 40s. Bombastic and insecure leading lady. Mezzo Belter: Low G#3-Belt or Mix to D#5 (High note: Soprano Ab5).
  • RUBY: Female. 20s. Innocent and sweet but catches on quickly. Newly arrived in NYC to be a Broadway star from Utah. Mezzo or Sop: Low Ab3-to High Bb5.
  • DICK: Male. Mid/late 20s. Happy-go-lucky Sailor originally from Utah who wants to be a Broadway Songwriter. In love with Ruby. Tenor: Low A to High A4.
  • JOAN: Female. Mid 20s-30s. A Sassy chorus girl. In love with Lucky and Helps Ruby become a star. Alto / Hi Mix Belter with a nice Mezzo Low A3-High G5, belts a high D5.
  • LUCKY: Male. Late 20s-30s. Another quirky sailor, Dick’s friend. He’s in love with Joan. Tenor or Baritone: Low A to F#4. Song and dance man.
  • HENNESEY/CAPTAIN: Male 40s-60s. Seeking actor to play double roles. Hennesey is a put-upon Broadway producer. Captain is a navy captain in command of the boys’ battleship. Tenor or Baritone: Low A to Ab4. Strong legit voice.

  • SIBYL CHASE: Female. Mid 20s. Coquettish, bubbly, and somewhat shallow. She is not given to particularly deep thought. Very much the blushing bride and is threatened by Elyot’s previous wife.
  • ELYOT CHASE: Male. 30s-50. Sibyl’s rich and handsome new husband who was formerly married to Amanda. He has a quick and cutting wit that he wields throughout the play.
  • AMANDA PRYNNE: Female. Mid 30s-Mid 40s. A beautiful second-time bride - formerly married to Elyot – and is now married to Victor. She has a fiery temper and a tendency toward impulsive behavior.
  • VICTOR PRYNNE: Male. Mid/late 30s. Amanda’s new husband. He is pleased to describe himself as “normal.” Formal, dignified, and possibly dull.
  • LOUISE: Female. Any age. A long-suffering French maid employed at Amanda’s Parisian flat.
