Breakdown

SEEKING:

TEVYE
Male, 35-60s - The likeable, hard-working, pious dairyman who always tries to see the positive side of life. He is a proud patriarch and father of five daughters, closely raised according to the old scriptures.

GOLDE
Female, 25-60s - Tevye's strong-willed wife who wishes for her daughters to have good husbands and live easier than she and Tevye. She is the real strength of the household, the practical, no-nonsense partner of her dreamer husband.

TZEITEL
Female, 18-25 - Tevye's eldest daughter. She is devoted and dutiful – but wary of having the choice of husband taken from her hands. She is in love with Motel the tailor, a gentle and sweet man with no money. Tzeitel is a good and helpful daughter who is devoted to her family and generally listens to her parents – but when it comes to matters of the heart, she can be incredibly stubborn, and incredibly convincing.

HODEL
Female, 18-23 - Tevye's second eldest daughter. She is intelligent and opinionated, coming to head with a young student, Perchik. Almost in spite of herself, she falls in love with him and eventually leaves Anatevka to join Perchik in Siberia.

CHAVA
Female, 15-20 - Tevye's middle daughter who loves to read. She is sweet and shy and is the “favorite child” of her father Tevye. She falls in love and runs off with Fydeka, a Russian soldier, even though she knows that her family will disown her for marrying a non-Jew.

SHPRINTZE
Female, 9-12 - Tevye's fouth eldest daughter who takes lessons at home from Perchik.

BIELKE
Female, 6-9 - Tevye's youngest daughter. Takes lessons at home from Perchik.

MOTEL
Male, 18-30 - The poor and meek tailor who shares a deep love with Tzeitel. Sensitive and nervous, but sincere and friendly.

PERCHIK
Male, 20-30 - The outspoken student and visitor to Anatevka, who constantly challenges the traditions of the town. He eventually falls in love with Hodel.

FYEDKA
Male, 18-25 - A handsome, strong, young Russian soldier who sees past his military obligations and falls in love with Chava. He challenges Tevye's imposed silence.

LAZAR WOLF
Male, 40s-60s - The feisty, brawny butcher and the town's wealthiest citizen who wishes to marry Tzeitel.

YENTE
Female, 30s-60s - The meddling matchmaker. She is a widow and village busybody who knows all of the town gossip.

CONSTABLE
Male, 35-60 - Russian military official stationed near Anatevka who knows the villagers well, however he has superficial relationships with the villagers.

RABBI
Male, 40-60 – A source of wisdom and guidance for the people of Anatevka – spiritually, religiously, and also with advice on their day-to-day lives.

MENDEL
Male, 20-30 – The Rabbi’s son who is being groomed to one day, hopefully, become the Rabbi. He is one for rules and specifics and is a strong adherent of tradition.

MORDCHA
Male, 30-60 – Runs the local bar in town and is a friend to Tevye.

AVRAM
Male, 40-60 – Runs the local bookshop in town and keeps the town informed of all the news in the area—news which is mostly bad.

FIDDLER
Male – The fiddler appears, playing music on the roof, to show how delicate the balance of life is as the Jews of Anatevka are living it. Must play violin.
