Breakdown

EDDIE BIRDLACE: A US Marine, Private First Class. He is well respected and a natural leader amongst his comrades. Initially a hothead; a cocky smooth talker. He eventually sheds his brash exterior when he falls for Rose. Male, 18-25 yrs. Range: A2-A4.

ROSE FENNY: a diner waitress who dreams of life as a musician. She is a naturally shy girl, naïve of the world around her. Becomes smitten with Birdlace and discovers a lot about her self-respect and confidence along the way. Female, 18-25 yrs. Twenties. Range: G3-E5.

BERNSTEIN: US Marine, Private First Class and Birdlace’s good friend. A bit nerdy and very inexperienced with the opposite sex. Male. 18-25 yrs. old. Range: B2-B4

BOLAND: A US Marine, Private First Class and Birdlace’s best closest friend. A poor Southern cad, he is the most vocal supporter of the dogfight and fairly crude in his behavior and language. He is an alpha type. Male, 18-25yrs. Range:B2-B4.

MARCY/PEGGY: Boland’s date for the dogfight. She is a brash, crass and nearly toothless homely prostitute (a prosthetic is used). Peggy is an attractive, flirtatious young woman. Female, 25-35 yrs. Range:F#3-Eb5.

FECTOR: US Marine, Private. 18-25 yrs. Not too terribly bright.

STEVENS: US Marine, Private First Class. 18-25 yrs. Cocky and rude.

GIBBS/PARTY DATE: US Marine, Private First Class. 18-25 yrs. Midwestern. Actor also plays a party date, as a female.

MAMA/SUZETTE: The owner of the local diner. She is unamused by the Marine’s antics and protective of her daughter, Rose. Suzette is a party date at the dogfight. Female, 40-50 yrs. Speaking role.

RUTH TWO BEARS/LIBRARIAN/CHIPPY: 20s/30s. Ruth Two Bears is a Native American. Shy and self conscious but can pack a whollop. The Librarian is a sheltered and nervous woman. Chippy is a prostitute who has serviced too many military guys and exhausted.

LOUNGE SINGER/PETE/SERGEANT/DRAG QUEEN/DINER PATRON/WAITER/BIG TONY: 30s-50s. A multiple track role. Many different characters. The Lounge Singer has a crooner’s voice singing 1960s dance songs at the Dog Fight. He is the judge of the contest.
