Please note we are looking for a company of actors that will be in residence at the Asolo Rep from November 26th through April 14th . The musicals will only have a commitment of the dates listed within this breakdown.


PREPARATION

Please prepare an appropriate short monologue or traditional musical theatre song. Or a one minute monologue and 16 bars of a song. Total audition time not to exceed 2 minutes. Bring picture and resume.

[HAROLD HILL]: A smooth talking con man and traveling Salesman. Strong actor, must be expert tap dancer. (Baritone, A Flat to High F)

[MARCELLUS WASHBURN]: Former con man and friend to Harold Hill who now lives in River City; becomes fast friends with Harold again and helps him learn about the town, tries to help Harold get out of town after the con; Comedic actor, must be expert tap dancer. (Tenor, G to High A)

[MARIAN PAROO]: Daughter to Mrs. Paroo and sister to Winthrop, she is the stuffy, conceited librarian and piano teacher in town. She is very learned and defends the “questionable” books that are in the library. She was close to her deceased father’s friend, Mr. Madison, and the town believes that she had an affair with him. Needs some dance movement ability. (Soprano, Low G to High A)

[EULALIE MACKECKNIE SHINN]: Mayor Shinn’s wife, she is definitely a society lady, knows everyone in town, struts about like a peacock and is somewhat snooty. A Member of every auxiliary organization in town, she has some strange ideas and doesn’t think she looks as ridiculous as she really is. Keeps her husband in line. (Alto, D to D)

[JOHN PROCTOR]: Male, 30s. Honest farmer forced to defend his wife and himself against witchcraft charges. While his wife was ill, he succumbed to temptation and was intimate with Abigail Williams.

[REV. SAMUEL PARRIS]: Male, 40s. Salem's current minister. A faction in his congregation is attempting to replace him. He at first attempts to silence rumors of witchcraft because his own daughter, Betty, and his niece, Abigail Williams, were involved in conjuring rites. However, he later vigorously supports the witch trials when he sees that they will work to his advantage.

[REV. JOHN HALE]: Male, late 20s/early 30s. Expert in detecting spirits. Well educated, he takes pride in his knowledge of the occult, but he is fair-minded. Although he first believes townspeople may be practicing witchcraft, he later defends accused persons, in particular Mr. and Mrs. Proctor.

[GOV. DANFORTH]: Male 50s. Presiding Judge who conducts the witchcraft hearings and trials.

[JUDGE HAWTHORNE]: Male, 30s-40s. Associate Judge.

[GILES COREY]: Male, 70s. Innocent citizen accused of witchcraft after he attempts to defend his wife, Martha, and expose scheming John Putnam. A courageous man who defies the court, he is pressed to death with heavy stones.

[THOMAS PUTNAM]: Male, 40s. Wealthy husband of Anne Putnam who uses the witchcraft frenzy implicate rivals and enemies.

[EZEKIEL CHEEVER]: Male, 30s. The town tailor who acts as clerk of the court during the witch trials. He is upright, obedient and determined to do his duty for justice.

[FRANCIS NURSE]: Male, 70s. A wealthy influential man in Salem. Nurse is well respected by most people in Salem, but is an enemy of Thomas Putnam and his wife. He is a good man and a good husband who has the courage to stand up to the court to try and save his wife, Rebecca.

[MARSHALL HERRICK], [MARSHALL WILLARD] & [DEPUTY HOPKINS]: Males, 20s-40s. Average men doing their jobs in Salem. Unfortunately they aid & abet the execution of innocent victims.

[ELIZABETH PROCTOR]: Female, 30s. John Proctor’s loyal and upright wife. She comes to realize that she may have been partly at fault for her husband's unfaithfulness because she was not always as warm and loving as she could have been.

[ABIGAIL WILLIAMS]: Female 20s, to play 17. lives with her uncle, the Rev. Parris, and his daughter, Betty. In a conjuring rite in the forest, where Abigail and other girls dance wildly around a cauldron, Abigail drinks rooster blood in attempt to summon spirits to kill Elizabeth Proctor. Mrs. Proctor had fired Abigail from her job as a servant at the Proctor farm because Abigail seduced her husband.

[BETTY PARRIS]: Female, 10-14. Daughter of the Rev. Parris. At the beginning of the play, she lies in a stupor supposedly caused by witchcraft.

[TITUBA]: Female, 40s. Slave of the Rev. Parris. The minister brought her to Salem from Barbados, where she learned occult practices. She presides at a conjuring session involving teenage and adolescent girls from Salem.

[ANNE PUTNAM]: Female, 40s. Wealthy wife of Tomas Putnam who uses the witchcraft frenzy implicate rivals and enemies.

[REBECCA NURSE]: Female, 60s. Charitable Salem resident whom Ann Putnam accuses of witchcraft.

[MARY WARREN]: Female, 20s to play a teenager. Servant of the Proctors who took part in the conjuring rite in the forest. She first agrees to testify against Abigail and the others. But, under pressure from her peers and the court, she renounces her testimony and sides with Abigail. Deputy Governor

[MERCY LEWIS]: Female, 20s to play a teenager. Servant of the Proctors who took part in the conjuring rite in the forest.

[SUSANNA WALCOTT]: Female, 20s to play a teenager. Took part in the rite in the forest.

[SARAH GOOD]: Female 30s-40s. Poor, homeless woman accused of witchcraft.

[TORVALD]: Male, late 50s. Nora’s estranged husband; mild-mannered, keeps his feelings and emotions close to himself, though he has many.

[ANNE MARIE]: Female, 65-75. The Helmer’s nanny; honest, blunt, and big-hearted.

[EMMY]: Female, 18. Nora’s and Torvald’s daughter; an old soul and a romantic; wise and mature in some ways, but still 18.

[EVAN]: 40s. African-American. Parole Officer. Confident and direct. He is a question answerer. He doesn’t like bullshit and will let you know it.

[CHRIS]: 21/29. African American. Cynthia and Brucie's son, Jason’s best friend; muscular, charismatic, youthful, warm; a steel worker, with aspirations to educate himself and find a life beyond the steel plant; eventually hardened into a disillusioned ex-con; he turns to religion to help him fight his darkness within.

[JASON]: 21/29. White American. Tracy's son, and Chris's best friend. He has the strong build of a young man who went from the gridiron straight to the production line; a steel worker with deep working class roots, he is proud of his blue collar heritage and still has faith that his life will be spent in the factory; youthful, tough, funny and charismatic; in prison he hardens into a white supremacist, his optimism transforming into rage.

[JESSIE]: 40's. White American. A drunk, a follower, prone to flashes of emotion. Her heart has been broken one too many times, and she baths her sadness in liquor.

[TRACEY]: 40s/50s. White American. Jason's mother. She and Cynthia have been best friends ever since, and have given their lives to the line; A steel worker and true company loyalist. Funny, brassy, bossy, opinionated and fiercely loyal; as her life begins to spiral out of control she can no longer manage the cocktail of disillusionment and anger that simmers below her surface.

[CYNTHIA]: 45/53. African American. Chris's mother, and Brucie's ex-wife. A steel worker; started at the plant as a teenager, she and Tracey have been best friends ever since, and have given their lives to the line; focused, ambitious and sturdy; despite the derision of her colleagues, she applies for a promotion and finally escapes the line and becomes a floor manager; Cynthia’s loyalty to her colleagues and friends is tested when the closing of the plant is announced; ultimately she can’t save them or herself.

[BRUCIE]: 40s. African American. Cynthia's ex-husband, and Chris's father. He used to work on the line but too much time striking and being unemployed as sent him towards drug addiction. A heroin addict, a dreamer, smooth talking charmer, whose looks are his primary currency. He believes what he’s saying in the moment, even if it is bullshit

[STAN]: 50s. White American. Old steel guy on disability, Warm and brotherly, a genuine listener. There is an edge of bitterness that is always lurking just beneath the surface. He is the guy who didn’t get out.

[OSCAR]: 20s. Colombian-American. A busboy at the local bar; he keeps to himself, always conscious that in this community of the disenfranchised and powerless he is at the bottom of the heap; when the steel plant locks out the workers, Oscar is willing to risk everything to cross the picket lines and seize the opportunity to better his life; although he was born in Berks County, he is still considered an outsider.

[LLOYD DALLAS]: Male. 50s. The director of Nothing On; authoritative, temperamental, harried, and sharp-tongued; involved in a love triangle that complicates both his work and personal life.

[SELSDON MOWBRAY]: Male. 60s-70s. An actor, alcoholic, and hard of hearing when it suits him. Rarely available when needed. Plays the part of “Burglar” in Nothing On.

[FREDERICK FELLOWES]: Male. 30s-40s. An actor. Nervous, not the brightest bulb, and constantly overcomplicating the direction he is given. Has an extreme aversion to violence and blood. Plays the part of “Philip Brent” in Nothing On.

[BELINDA BLAIR]: Female. 40s. An actress. Sensible, reliable, but a bit of a gossip. Thinks of herself as the glue that holds the company together. Plays the part of “Flavia Brent” in Nothing On.

[GARRY LEJEUNE]: Male. Mid 20s-30s. An actor. Does his best to keep company morale high, but is easily flustered. Jealous, and often loses his train of thought. Plays the part of “Roger Tramplemain” in Nothing On.

[BROOKE ASHTON]: Female. Mid 20s-30s. An actress. Beautiful. Oblivious to everyone and everything going on around her. In constant search of her contact lens. Plays the part of “Vicki” in Nothing On.

[TIM ALLGOOD]: Male. 20s. The company and stage manager of Nothing On. Overworked, sleep deprived, and generally exhausted.

[POPPY NORTON-TAYLOR]: Female. 20s. The Assistant Stage Manager of Nothing On. Desperately attempts to keep the show and company from falling apart. Emotional, overly sensitive and often on the verge of tears. Seeking an extremely strong comedic actress.

[MRS. LOVETT]: Female. 30s 40s. G3 to E5. An entrepreneurial and amoral meat pie shop owner. She falls in love with Todd and turns his desire for revenge into a profitable business venture.

[ANTHONY HOPE]: Male. 18-35. Bb2 to F4. A naïve and youthful sailor returning to London. He helps Todd return to London and unexpectedly falls in love with Johanna.

[JOHANNA BARKER]: Female. 18-30. Bb3 to A5. Full of innocence, constantly yearning for freedom. Todd’s long-lost daughter and Turpin’s ward.

[JUDGE TURPIN]: Male. E2 to Gb4. A lecherous public official who portrays himself as a sanctimonious authoritarian. He takes advantage of his position in the city and is responsible for imprisoning Todd.

[BEADLE BAMFORD]: Male. A Pompous public official. He is deeply loyal to the corrupt Turpin.

[TOBIAS RAGG]: Male. Bb2 to Ab4. A poor youngster apprentice to Pirelli. He finds a surrogate family in Todd and Lovett.

[BEGGAR WOMAN]. Female. 18-40. F5 to Ab3. A deranged and schizophrenic woman who has a surprising secret.

[ADOLFO PIRELLI]: Male. B2 to C5. A flamboyant Italian rival barber; a charlatan with a secret past.

[JONAS FOGG]: Male. Owner of Fogg’s Asylum. He sells the hair of madmen to wigmakers.

[JEN]. White, female, early 30s. Has dreamt of her wedding day her whole life and has the wedding binder to prove it.

[MACY]: Black ,female, early 30s. African American. Jen’s fiancé. Truly loves Jen, but does not love what this wedding is turning her into.
