Breakdown

AND I AND SILENCE: Two imprisoned teenagers, one black, one white, form a perilous bond. As the young women serve time, they forge a plan for survival. When the outside world proves even more dangerous than the jail itself, their private world becomes an untenable practice ground for their new lives. AND I AND SILENCE explores the fierce dreams of youth and the brutal reality of adulthood in 1950's America.

SEEKING:

JAMIE
Female, African-American, 26 years old. Working class. Very smart-practical and tough. Steely, but unflinchingly optimistic-can be playful at times. Likes words, rhyming and songs. Jamie has more awareness about the world around her than Dee.

DEE
Female, Caucasian, 25 years old. Working class. Smart. Tough, and fiercely loyal. Younger than Jamie, but can be mature and tender. Although she tries to keep up with Jamie's unflinching optimism, Dee retreats into darkness as the play progresses.

YOUNG JAMIE
Female, African-American, 17 years old. Suspicious and wary of Dee when she first arrives at the prison-has more of a barrier up, but loves the games they establish. More aware of the oppressive forces around them than Dee, but believes she can overcome them with good practice.

YOUNG DEE
Female, Caucasian, 16 years old. Just as tough as her older self. A willing student-earnest and eager to make friends with Jamie, even when she is punished for it. Delights in the role-play they establish and enthusiastic to follow Jamie’s example.
