The world premiere of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s ABIGAIL/1702, a new play about Abigail Williams ten years after the Salem witch trials.
What really happened to The Crucible’s Abigail Williams after she stole through Salem’s forest one dark night in search of a new life and new beginning? In this exciting world premiere, 10 years have passed since the infamous witch trials, but Abigail still struggles to atone for her sins, the ones history remembers — and darker ones that live in her heart. As she cares for a young sailor on the brink of death, a mysterious stranger from Abigail’s past catches up with her, sending her on one final, suspense-filled quest for redemption.
SEEKING:
ABIGAIL
(20s – early 30s) Ten years after the Salem witch trials, Abigail Williams lives in the woods outside of Boston under the assumed name Ruth Meadows, where she tries to atone for her sins by running a plague house for the sick. She is cautious, repentant, and devout but we get occasional glimpses of her passion and sexuality. Above all, she is a survivor, determined to make amends and earn her redemption. Attractive, grounded, strong voice, with the ability to mine the depths of this iconic character and carry the play on her shoulders. Seeking a Star name/well established actress.
JOHN BROWN
(mid 20s-early 30s) A refugee sailor, he arrives in Abigail’s life seeking a cure for his plague. He is running from something and keeps his most personal secrets to himself. John seeks redemption and hopes to find it by forging a new life with Abigail. Very attractive (must appear shirtless), strong, and charismatic.
REVEREND PARRIS/JUDGE SEWALL/MAN IN GRAY
(40s – 60s) Parris is Abigail’s uncle from “The Crucible.” The Judge formed part of the court during the witch trials and now seeks to redeem himself for his poor judgment. The Man in Gray (Satan) is a charming and ominous figure who finds Abigail after a ten year search and will now collect her soul.
MARGARET HALE/CRONE/ELIZABETH PROCTOR
(40s – 50s) – Margaret takes in Abigail and gives her a home and new identity after the witch trials. She is earthy and suspicious, but ultimately kind. The Crone is an old woman who appears to warn Abigail. Elizabeth, wife of John Proctor, has remarried and is living a new life when Abigail finds her in a desperate attempt to seek forgiveness. Regal, strong, a force to be reckoned with.
