MAMMA MIA! To Make A Splash On The Bonstelle Stage!

This April the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance, a program within the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts at Wayne State University, is producing Benny Andersson & Bjorn Ulvaeus's record-breaking Broadway musical, Mamma Mia! Over 54 million people all around the world have fallen in love with the characters, the story and the music that make Mamma Mia! the ultimate feel-good show. A mother. A daughter. Three possible dads. Performing at the Bonstelle Theatre April 5 to 14, it's a trip down the aisle you'll never forget!

Having set the record for premiering in more cities faster than any other musical in history, Mamma Mia! has been seen by more than 60 million people worldwide. Mamma Mia! is based on the songs of ABBA, a Swedish pop/dance group active from 1972 to 1982. It made its debut in the West End in 1999 and has since played in more than 50 countries, including an almost 14-year, 5,773 performance run on Broadway. From ABBA favorites like, "Money, Money, Money," "Thank You for the Music," "SOS," "The Winner Takes it All," and, of course, "Mamma Mia!," audiences will relish this pop-infused vacation.

To bring some of the ABBA fun to you, Theatre and Dance at Wane is hosting a Mamma Mia! sing-along on March 24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Detroit Shipping Company, located in Midtown at 474 Peterboro Street. Come on out, enjoy some great food and drinks and sing-along with your favorite ABBA hits.

Scotty Arnold, director of our 2017-2018 production of The Underpants, is back at Wayne State and ready to bring this story to life. In addition to his directing work, he is a musical theater writer, whose musical When We're Gone (words by Alana Jacoby) received its world premiere at the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma last fall. He served as the resident composer of the Notre Dame Shakespeare Festival for three seasons, where he will return to direct next summer. "The infectious joy that runs through this show has made it a worldwide success and the classic jukebox musical," explains Arnold. "We've had a blast creating this sun-soaked extravaganza, and we hope you dance, and jive, and have the time of your life. But watch out for those super trouper beams: they can damage your eyesight."
